Neutrino masses: evidences and implications
2014
I give an overview of the evidences for neutrino masses and mixing, the associated neutrino mass generation schemes, as well as the resulting implications in particle physics experiments and cosmology.
Counter-propagating difference-frequency generation in diamond with terahertz fields
2013
The nonlinear interaction of terahertz (THz) pulses with optical fields in Kerr, gaseous media is a key ingredient for broadband THz detection schemes [1]. Terahertz field-induced second harmonic generation in solid-state media has also been considered for THz detection and as a tool e.g. for liquid dynamics investigations [2,3], while four-wave mixing has been addressed as a possible mechanism for THz generation [4,5]. © 2013 IEEE.
Plasma Electron Kinetics and Distribution Functions in Laser Fields
2010
A concise review of the properties of electron distribution functions in a fully ionized plasma in the presence of a high-frequency laser field is presented. In detail is discussed the physical origin of most of the reported results in the case of strong fields. The presence of a laser field, through the inverse bremsstrahlung absorption, alters dynamically the roles of and the interplay between electron-ion and electron-electron collisions shaping the distribution function. Special attention is paid to the role of e-e collisions in the process of laser-plasma interaction.
Orientation dependence of high-order harmonic generation in molecules
2003
We present two- and three-dimensional model calculations of high-order harmonic generation in ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{+}.$ The harmonic spectra exhibit clear signatures of intramolecular interference. An interference minimum appears at a harmonic order that depends on the molecular orientation. Harmonic generation in three-center molecules is studied on the basis of two-dimensional calculations for a ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{2+}$ model system. From analytical considerations, the orientation dependence of the harmonic intensities in three-center molecules exhibits a double minimum due to intramolecular interference. In the numerical results, the double minimum is broadened into a single wide minimum. T…
A paradigm of fullerene
2009
We study the dynamics of an electron constrained over the surface of a rigid sphere, with geometrical parameters similar to those of the C60 fullerene, embedded in a low intensity linearly polarized laser field. The model is shown to emit odd harmonics of the laser even at very low field intensity. For more intense laser fields, the spectrum presents odd harmonics and hyper-Raman lines shaped in a broad plateau. The spectrum of the model is compared to that theoretically obtained by other authors for more realistic models of C60. It is concluded that the model can be used as a paradigm for mesoscopic molecules in the fullerene family, particularly in practical applications where it is conve…
Experimental observation of incoherent modulation instability in standard optical fibers
2005
In this work, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that a partially temporally incoherent light can exhibit modulational instability when propagating in an optical fiber with instantaneous nonlinear Kerr response.
Monte Carlo Simulation of Harmonic Generation in GaAs structures operating under large-signal Conditions
2007
By using a multiparticles Monte Carlo technique, with a self-consistently coupled one-dimensional Poisson solver, we investigate the dependence of the nonlinear carrier dynamics in GaAs n+nn+ micro e submicro-structures operating under very intense sub-terahertz signals by: (i) the frequency and the intensity of the excitation signal and (ii) the length of the n region.
Second harmonic generation in multimode graded-index fibers: spatial beam cleaning and multiple harmonic sideband generation
2017
We study experimentally and numerically the spectral and spatial dynamics of second harmonic generation in an all-optically poled multimode graded-index fiber. In contrast with poled single-mode fibers, in a multimode graded-index fiber a pump can generate a series of sharp sidebands around its second harmonic (SH) that originate from the sub-millimetric periodic evolution of the intensity at the fundamental frequency. The mutual interaction between the fundamental and its SH may also strongly affect the spatial distribution of guided light for both colors: when increasing the pump power, both fundamental and SH output beams evolve from disordered multimode speckles into two bell-shaped bea…
Challenges with balancing excitations in intermediate-band solar cells
2015
New insight into the potential of practical solar cells can be given through alternative modeling approaches like Monte Carlo simulations. In the present work, the performance of intermediate band solar cells was examined by this method. It is demonstrated that the balance of excitations from the valence band to the intermediate band and from the intermediate band to the conduction band is of great importance for the performance of such cells. Several cases with different distributions of photons given by ASTM standards have been employed in order to detect spectrum sensitivity. Incident photons are accounted for as they interact with the electrons in the valence band or in the intermediate…
High-order harmonic generation in fullerenes using few- and multi-cycle pulses of different wavelengths
2012
We present the results of experimental and theoretical studies of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in plasmas containing fullerenes using pulses of different duration and wavelength. We find that the harmonic cutoff is extended in the case of few-cycle pulses (3.5 fs, 29th harmonic) compared to longer laser pulses (40 fs, 25th harmonic) at the same intensity. Our studies also include HHG in fullerenes using 1300 and 780 nm multicycle (35 and 40 fs) pulses. For 1300 nm pulses, an extension of the harmonic cutoff to the 41st order was obtained, with a decrease in conversion efficiency that is consistent with theoretical predictions based on wave packet spreading for single atoms. Theoreti…
