This paper investigates the finite-time distributedL2–L∞consensus control problem of multiagent systems with parameter uncertainties. The relative states of neighboring agents are used to construct the control law and some agents know their own states. By substituting the control input into multiagent systems, an augmented closed-loop system is obtained. Then, we analyze its finite-time boundedness (FTB) and finite-timeL2–L∞performance. A sufficient condition for the existence of the designed controller is given with the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, simulation results are described.

Computation of travelling wave solutions of scalar conservation laws with a stiff source term

2003

Abstract In this paper we propose a nonoscillatory numerical technique to compute the travelling wave solution of scalar conservation laws with a stiff source term. This procedure is based on the dynamical behavior described by the associated stationary ODE and it reduces/avoids numerical errors usually encountered with these problems, i.e., spurious oscillations and incorrect wave propagation speed. We combine this treatment with either the first order Lax–Friedrichs scheme or the second order Nessyahu–Tadmor scheme. We have tested several model problems by LeVeque and Yee for which the stiffness coefficient can be increased. We have also tested a problem with a nonlinear flux and a discon…

Adaptive mesh refinement techniques for high-order shock capturing schemes for multi-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations

2006

The numerical simulation of physical phenomena represented by non-linear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws presents specific difficulties mainly due to the presence of discontinuities in the solution. State of the art methods for the solution of such equations involve high resolution shock capturing schemes, which are able to produce sharp profiles at the discontinuities and high accuracy in smooth regions, together with some kind of grid adaption, which reduces the computational cost by using finer grids near the discontinuities and coarser grids in smooth regions. The combination of both techniques presents intrinsic numerical and programming difficulties. In this work we present a …

The Southern African Power Pool: An Electrifying Project with Untapped Potential

2017

This chapter turns to infrastructure and gives an outstanding analysis of regional electricity cooperation in the SADC within the framework of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). The author illustrates the regional power imbalances in terms of national electricity generation and consumption which fuel the SADC countries’ demand for a regional electricity market and an interconnected regional power grid. It becomes clear that the SAPP’s institutional design is strongly influenced by South Africa as the hub of the existing power network and largest electricity producer. Influence by external actors is supportive of regional electricity cooperation since the EU provides funding for the SAP…

Household Expenditure on Leisure: a Comparative Study of Italian Households with Children from Y- and Z-Generation

2019

The intrinsic complexity of post-materialist society makes it challenging to investigate the connection between social changes and generations. However, the study of consumption might help in the analysis of such a connection. In this paper, we analyse empirical data of consumption on leisure of Italian households, and focus on families at a very precise stage of family life-cycle, that is, couples with teenager children. We look at consumption of households at different points in time, 2001, 2007, and 2012, in order to investigate the impact of both social change and generation of children–Y-generation in 2001 and 2007, and Z-generation in 2012–on the leisure expenditure patterns of famili…

Photovoltaic electricity scenario analysis in urban contests: an Italian case study

2012

Abstract This paper shows a methodology for the assessment of the photovoltaic potential in urban areas using Google Earth™ tool that provides either satellite images of the roofs of buildings or their number of floors by means of the Street View function. The applicability of the methodology has been tested on a selected urban area of the city of Palermo in the South of Italy. After classifying roofs according to the shape, orientation and pitch of buildings with different morphologies, the share of energy generated by the installable PV systems was evaluated with regard to the number of floors. Moreover the coverage of the electricity demand was investigated on the basis of the consumptio…

Experimental generation of optical flaticon pulses

2013

International audience; We experimentally investigate the nonlinear reshaping of a continuous wave which leads to chirp-free and flat-top intense pulses or flaticons exhibiting strong temporal oscillations at their edges and a stable self-similar expansion upon propagation of their central region. This study was performed in the normal dispersion regime of a non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber and involved a sinusoidal phase modulation of the continuous wave. Our fiber optics experiment is analogous to considering the collision between oppositely directed currents near the beach, and it may open the way to new investigations in the field of hydrodynamics.

Applicability of Waste Engine Oil for the Direct Production of Electricity

2021

New methods for the use of waste products as input for other technologies are a constant subject of research efforts. One such product is waste engine oil. Due to the constantly increasing number of motor vehicles in the world, the recycling or application of engine oils for energy production purposes is currently of considerable importance. This paper contains research regarding the analysis of the electro-oxidation potential of waste engine oil, and thus the possibility of using such oil as a material in fuel cells. The research demonstrates the basic possibility of the electro-oxidation of this oil emulsion on a platinum electrode in an acid electrolyte (aqueous solution of H2SO4). It wa…
