Amateur doping: a survey on Sicilian population

In the last years, amateur doping phenomenon has caused many victims. In order to know the diffusion of this phenomenon, we conducted an online survey thanks to Google forms. We also converted on paper the same questionnaire and we administered it in many gyms in Palermo and Trapani (Sicily, Italy). The examined sample consists of 976 people aged between 14 and 65 (47.3% of them are women and 52.7% are men). We asked them if they had ever taken substances to improve their athletic performances: 25.8% of them answered affirmatively and declared to take protein, amino acids, but also Ephedrine, Caffeine, Aspirin on a regular basis (34.6%). Ecological genetics of a cyclical parthenogen in temporary habitats

Populations of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis inhabiting three temporary ponds in Torreblanca Marsh (Castellon, Spain) were regularly screened for allozyme variation, sexual reproduction levels and population densities during an annual cycle. Relevant ecological parameters in the ponds were also recorded. The electrophoretic survey of the three ponds (Poza Sur, Poza Norte and Canal Central) revealed a high level of overall genetic polymorphism in four marker loci, but only 13 multilocus genotypes were found. ABSTRACT To investigate the influence of environmental pollution on the population genetics of Dreissena polymorpha, we developed five new polymorphic micro satellite loci for the zebra mussel. This mussel is widely distributed and is a common bioindicator in the field of ecotoxicology. The amplification of the microsatellite loci was tested on a single population of 24 individuals. In this population, the number of alleles per locus ranged from 3–14, and the observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.545–0.909 (mean, 0.772). The interaction between two species may depend on geographic scale and this in turn can affect co-evolution among them. The present study comparatively examines population genetic structures of the tephritid gall fly Urophora cardui and its primary ectoparasitoid Eurytoma robusta for inference of relative dispersal patterns and host parasitoid specificity. Three subspecies of Armeria arenaria are reported from Italy, two of which are considered endemic to the Apennines. The taxonomic value of these two taxa (A. arenaria subsp. marginata and A. arenaria subsp. apennina) is unclear.
