On GIT quotients of Hilbert and Chow schemes of curves

2011

The aim of this note is to announce some results on the GIT problem for the Hilbert and Chow scheme of curves of degree d and genus g in P^{d-g}, whose full details will appear in a subsequent paper. In particular, we extend the previous results of L. Caporaso up to d>4(2g-2) and we observe that this is sharp. In the range 2(2g-2)<d<7/2(2g-2), we get a complete new description of the GIT quotient. As a corollary, we get a new compactification of the universal Jacobian over the moduli space of pseudo-stable curves.

A note on the Schur multiplier of a nilpotent Lie algebra

2011

For a nilpotent Lie algebra $L$ of dimension $n$ and dim$(L^2)=m$, we find the upper bound dim$(M(L))\leq {1/2}(n+m-2)(n-m-1)+1$, where $M(L)$ denotes the Schur multiplier of $L$. In case $m=1$ the equality holds if and only if $L\cong H(1)\oplus A$, where $A$ is an abelian Lie algebra of dimension $n-3$ and H(1) is the Heisenberg algebra of dimension 3.

Geometry and arithmetic of Maschke's Calabi-Yau three-fold

2011

Maschke's Calabi-Yau three-fold is the double cover of projective three space branched along Maschke's octic surface. This surface is defined by the lowest degree invariant of a certain finite group acting on a four-dimensional (4D) vector space. Using this group, we show that the middle Betti cohomology group of the three-fold decomposes into the direct sum of 150 2D Hodge substructures. We exhibit 1D families of rational curves on the three-fold and verify that the associated Abel-Jacobi map is non-trivial. By counting the number of points over finite fields, we determine the rank of the Neron-Severi group of Maschke's surface and the Galois representation on the transcendental lattice of…

Special arrangements of lines: Codimension 2 ACM varieties in P 1 × P 1 × P 1

2019

In this paper, we investigate special arrangements of lines in multiprojective spaces. In particular, we characterize codimension 2 arithmetically Cohen–Macaulay (ACM) varieties in [Formula: see text], called varieties of lines. We also describe their ACM property from a combinatorial algebra point of view.

Multiprojective spaces and the arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay property

2019

AbstractIn this paper we study the arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) property for sets of points in multiprojective spaces. Most of what is known is for ℙ1× ℙ1and, more recently, in (ℙ1)r. In ℙ1× ℙ1the so called inclusion property characterises the ACM property. We extend the definition in any multiprojective space and we prove that the inclusion property implies the ACM property in ℙm× ℙn. In such an ambient space it is equivalent to the so-called (⋆)-property. Moreover, we start an investigation of the ACM property in ℙ1× ℙn. We give a new construction that highlights how different the behavior of the ACM property is in this setting.

Chern classes of the moduli stack of curves

2005

Here we calculate the Chern classes of ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_{g,n}$, the moduli stack of stable n-pointed curves. In particular, we prove that such classes lie in the tautological ring.

Corrigendum: Unirationality of Hurwitz Spaces of Coverings of Degree ≤5

2017

We correct Proposition 3.12 and Lemma 3.13 of the paper published in Vol. 2013, No.13, pp.3006-3052. The corrections do not affect the other statements of the paper. In this note, we correct a flow in the statement of Proposition 3.12 of [1] which also leads to a modification in the statement of Lemma 3.13 of [1]. We recall that in this proposition one considers morphisms of schemes X ?→π Y ?→q S, where q is proper, flat, with equidimensional fibers of dimension n and π is finite, flat and surjective. Imposing certain conditions on the fibers it is claimed that the loci of s € S fulfilling these conditions are open subsets of S. A missing condition should be added and the correct version of…

Expecting the unexpected: Quantifying the persistence of unexpected hypersurfaces

2021

If $X \subset \mathbb P^n$ is a reduced subscheme, we say that $X$ admits an unexpected hypersurface of degree $t$ for multiplicity $m$ if the imposition of having multiplicity $m$ at a general point $P$ fails to impose the expected number of conditions on the linear system of hypersurfaces of degree $t$ containing $X$. Conditions which either guarantee the occurrence of unexpected hypersurfaces, or which ensure that they cannot occur, are not well understand. We introduce new methods for studying unexpectedness, such as the use of generic initial ideals and partial elimination ideals to clarify when it can and when it cannot occur. We also exhibit algebraic and geometric properties of $X$ …
