PROPOSAL FOR A LANDSCAPE EVALUATION SYSTEM

2023

Abstract. This paper describes a system, currently being designed, for both perceptual analysis and aesthetic evaluation of a landscape. The choice of this topic is motivated by the fact that systems related to landscape visibility (e.g. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for visual impact assessment) are not fully satisfactory when it comes to assessing the aesthetic appearance. They mainly analyse geometric aspects, such as the width of visual basins or the interference of visual trajectories, which can be expressed by objective and comparable parameters. Instead, for effective landscape knowledge and protection, it is important to consider other factors that cannot be easily measured…

MAIN FEATURES OF A 3D GIS FOR A MONUMENTAL COMPLEX WITH AN HISTORICAL-CULTURAL RELEVANCE

2018

Abstract. The last achievements of technologies in geomatics especially in survey and restitution of 3D models (UAV/drones and laser scanner technologies) generated new procedures and higher standards of quality in representation of archaeological sites. Together with Geomatics, the recent development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) strongly contribute to document and the Cultural Heritage (CH). The representation and documentation of CH using these new technologies has became necessary in order to satisfy different needs: – for restorers in order to acquire a deep knowledge of the cultural good and to define possible strategies of restoration; – for the conservation of …

Metodologia GIS per la valutazione ambientale strategica

2007

Liquid Biopsy in Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor

2017

Over the past 15 years, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) have emerged from a poorly understood neoplasm to a well-defined tumor entity. Starting from 2000, the discovery of gain-of-function mutations involving KIT or PDGFRα (platelet-derived growth factor-α) genes and the development of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), such as imatinib, revolutionized dramatically the management of GISTs. Due to the almost continual emergence of new data about biological complexity of GISTs and more sophisticated whole-genome technologies, to date, the role of molecular biology is clinically important to drive therapeutic decision making. The possibility of using liquid biopsy in GISTs was reported…

Assessment of Gully Erosion Susceptibility Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines and Accounting for Terrain Connectivity

2017

In this work, we assessed gully erosion susceptibility in two adjacent cultivated catchments of Sicily (Italy) by employing multivariate adaptive regression splines and a set of geo-environmental variables. To explore the influence of hydrological connectivity on gully occurrence, we measured the changes of performance occurred when adding one by one nine predictors reflecting terrain connectivity to a base model that included contributing area and slope gradient. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the area under the ROC curve were used to evaluate model performance. Gully predictive models were trained in both the catchments and submitted to internal (in the calibration cat…

Predicting Earthquake-Induced Landslides by Using a Stochastic Modeling Approach: A Case Study of the 2001 El Salvador Coseismic Landslides

2023

In January and February 2001, El Salvador was hit by two strong earthquakes that triggered thousands of landslides, causing 1259 fatalities and extensive damage. The analysis of aerial and SPOT-4 satellite images allowed us to map 6491 coseismic landslides, mainly debris slides and flows that occurred in volcanic epiclastites and pyroclastites. Four different multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) models were produced using different predictors and landslide inventories which contain slope failures triggered by an extreme rainfall event in 2009 and those induced by the earthquakes of 2001. In a predictive analysis, three validation scenarios were employed: the first and the second …

A Classification of Palermo Historical Centre Heritage based on the local seismic response

2009

A very high density of monumental heritage falls within Palermo Historical Centre, an area characterized by high variability of near surface geology and soil physical-mechanical properties on a very short distance scale, even few meters. So, neighboring heritage elements can have a totally different hazard exposition. Within a project regarding Palermo area (Project 7T7, Cluster 29, funded by Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca, Italy) a very reliable high density stratigraphic-geotechnical dataset has been assembled, by means of a careful data reviewing process. This dataset has been stored in a Geographic Information System (GIS) application, named City-GIS, having all GIS functions…

QUALITATIVE GIS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IN THE URBAN MANAGEMENT

2015

Multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity are increasingly transforming European cities: in this complexity, making right policies to guarantee the social justice and the quality of life is really difficult. More generally it’s an ethical problem. Society isn’t uniform, and to safeguard the multiplicity, giving all the citizens (women, children, strangers, young or old people) the same rights, we must change the way of making knowledge. Planners should adopt mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) to analyse the urban context, and also representations should include all the citizens’ points of view, through new mapping systems. Traditional maps could be integrated with new typologies of dra…
