THe role of autologous nerve fragments implantation in enhancing peripheral nerve regeneration

2014

ntroduction: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of seeding a nerve suture with autologous nerve fragments. Our hypothesis is that the fragments could improve axonal regeneration. Back to Top | Article Outline Material and Methods: On 20 Sprague-Dawley rats a 15mm sciatic nerve defect was created and grafted. In the study group (n=10) a 1mm nerve segment was minced and seeded around the distal suture. In the control group (n=10) no fragments were seeded. Rats were sacrificed at 4 (n= 10) and 12 weeks (n= 10) and number of regenerated fibers, fiber area and density, Soleus and Gastrocnemius muscles mass indexes, and walking track analysis in the 12 weeks group were evaluated. Polybutylene Succinate Processing and Evaluation as a Micro Fibrous Graft for Tissue Engineering Applications

2022

A microfibrous tubular scaffold has been designed and fabricated by electrospinning using poly (1,4-butylene succinate) as biocompatible and biodegradable material. The scaffold morphology was optimized as a small diameter and micro-porous conduit, able to foster cell integration, adhesion, and growth while avoiding cell infiltration through the graft’s wall. Scaffold morphology and mechanical properties were explored and compared to those of native conduits. Scaffolds were then seeded with adult normal human dermal fibroblasts to evaluate cytocompatibility in vitro. Haemolytic effect was evaluated upon incubation with diluted whole blood. The scaffold showed no delamination, and mech…

Marginal bone loss around cement and screw-retained fixed implant prosthesis

2018

Background Implant-supported fixed restorations are considered as the standard treatment for replacement of missing teeth. These can be either screw or cement retained. The success or failure of implant restorations depend upon amount of marginal bone loss (MBL). The present study is to determine the MBL around cement and screw-retained implant prosthesis and to determine various predictors of the MBL. Material and Methods A retrospective charts review was conducted at the dental clinics, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi from February 2017 to June 2017 in which 104 implants restorations were assessed using periapical radiographs. MBL was calculated at baseline and at 12 months and the …

Retrograde in situ versus antegrade pulmonary preservation in clinical lung transplantation: a single-centre experience.

2014

OBJECTIVE Experimental and clinical studies have indicated a beneficial effect of retrograde lung preservation on post-transplant results. Accordingly, we conducted a non-randomized trial. METHODS A total of 209 consecutive recipients transplanted with low-potassium dextrane (LPD)-preserved lungs were eligible for analysis. Antegrade lung preservation (AP) was performed in 173 patients and retrograde in situ perfusion (RP) in 36 patients using low-potassium dextrane solution in all cases. The prostacycline was added to preservation solution. RESULTS The main donor, graft and recipient characteristics did not differ significantly between groups. There was a beneficial trend toward improved o…

Iatrogenic acute aortic dissection type A: insight from the German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A (GERAADA)†

2013

OBJECTIVES: Previous investigators have reported a grave prognosis for iatrogenic acute aortic dissection (iAADA), but such studies are limited by their small sample sizes. The purpose of the current study was to analyse the clinical characteristics, current management and surgical outcomes in a large number of iAADA patients identified through a multicentre registry. METHODS: Between July 2006 and June 2010, 50 centres participated in the German Registry for Acute Aortic Dissection Type A (GERAADA). Of the 2137 patients included, 100 (5%) had iAADA. We compared the clinical features and 30-day outcomes of patients with iatrogenic and spontaneous acute aortic dissection type A (sAADA). RESU…

Revaskularisation mit der A. gastroepiploica dextra — Bewertung der Indikation und des perioperativen Risikos

1997

Ovine Biosynthetic Grafts for Aortoiliac Reconstructions in Nonsterile Operative Fields.

2021

Abstract Background Prosthetic vascular grafts placed surgically or via endovascular techniques can be subject to the risk of life-threatening graft infections. The Omniflow II vascular prosthesis is a biosynthetic graft that was reported to have favorable properties in resisting infections. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed our 3 years' experience of using the Omniflow II prostheses for aortoiliac reconstructions in patients considered to carry a substantial risk of subsequent prosthetic graft infections (prevention group) as well as in patients with actively infected prosthetic vascular grafts (treatment group). Results Aorto-bi-iliac (n = 4) and aortobifemoral (n = 12) va…

Unravelling Radicals Reactivity Towards Carbon Nanotubes Manipulation/Functionalization

2016

Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) chemistry is under constant evolution, as a consequence of the deep interest of the scientific community in finding new applications for these versatile materials. New and old synthetic protocols are used for improving the control of the functionalization degree of the final materials and for offering to scientists the possibility to fine-tune their final properties. In this Review, we focus the attention on radical reactions, a class of protocols characterized by small number of steps, different degrees of functionalization and enhanced solubility of the final modified CNTs, in the desired environment. The most well-known protocols are analysed providing some releva…

One-year implant survival following lateral window sinus augmentation using plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) : a retrospective study

2019

Background The aim of this study was to assess one-year implant survival after lateral window sinus augmentation using PRGF combined with various bone grafting materials. Material and Methods This was a retrospective chart review and radiographic analysis of patients that had undergone lateral window sinus augmentation with PRGF and had dental implants placed at least 6 months post augmentation. All implants included were followed up for at least one year after placement. Demographic, sinus and implant related characteristics (residual ridge height, sinus membrane perforation, type of graft material, implant length and width and ISQ at placement) were analyzed. Results A total of 31 patient…
