Opportunities and Limitations of Haptic Technologies for Non-visual Access to 2D and 3D Graphics

2014

Existing and emerging haptic technologies offer methods for non-visually rendering and interacting with 2D and 3D graphical information. These technologies include force feedback devices, touch surfaces with vibrotactile feedback, wearable vibrotactiles, and touch surfaces with electrostatic feedback. In this paper we will focus on approaches to non-visual access to 3D shapes. The interactive models focus on two approaches: simulation of 3D shape and perspective on a 2D touch surface; and interactive exploration of 3D shapes using physical motion in a virtual 3D space with either a force feedback controller or wearable haptics. The technologies will be reviewed along with suitability for th…

A Distributed Framework for Scalable Large-Scale Crowd Simulation

2007

Emerging applications in the area of Emergency Response and Disaster Management are increasingly demanding interactive capabilities to allow for the quick understanding of a critical situation, in particular in urban environments. A key component of these interactive simulations is how to recreate the behavior of a crowd in real- time while supporting individual behaviors. Crowds can often be unpredictable and present mixed behaviors such as panic or aggression, that can very rapidly change based on unexpected new elements introduced into the environment. We present preliminary research specifically oriented towards the simulation of large crowds for emergency response and rescue planning s…

Knowledge Acquisition from Multiple Experts Based on Semantics of Concepts

1999

This paper presents one approach to acquire knowledge from multiple experts. The experts are grouped into a multilevel hierarchical structure, according to the type of knowledge acquired. The first level consists of experts who have knowledge about the basic objects and their relationships. The second level of experts includes those who have knowledge about the relationships of the experts at the first level and each higher level accordingly. We show how to derive the most supported opinion among the experts at each level. This is used to order the experts into categories of their competence defined as the support they get from their colleagues.

Quasi *-Algebras of Operators in Rigged Hilbert Spaces

2002

In this chapter, we will study families of operators acting on a rigged Hilbert space, with a particular interest in their partial algebraic structure. In Section 10.1 the notion of rigged Hilbert space D[t] ↪ H ↪ D × [t ×] is introduced and some examples are presented. In Section 10.2, we consider the space.L(D, D ×) of all continuous linear maps from D[t] into D × [t ×] and look for conditions under which (L(D, D ×), L +(D)) is a (topological) quasi *-algebra. Moreover the general problem of introducing in L(D, D ×) a partial multiplication is considered. In Section 10.3 representations of abstract quasi *-algebras into quasi*-algebras of operators are studied and the GNS-construction is …

A continuum damage model for functionalized graphene membranes based on atomistic simulations

2017

A continuum model for GO membranes is developed in this study. The model is built representing the membrane as a two-dimensional, heterogeneous, two-phase continuum and the constitutive behavior of each phase (graphitic or oxidized) is built based on DFTB simulations of representative patches. A hyper-elastic continuum model is employed for the graphene areas, while a continuum damage model is more adequate for representing the behavior of oxidized regions. A finite element implementation for GO membranes subjected to degradation and failure is then implemented and, to avoid localization instabilities and spurious mesh sensitivity, a simple crack band model is adopted. The developed impleme…

Application of 2D Non-Graphene Materials and 2D Oxide Nanostructures for Biosensing Technology

2016

The discovery of graphene and its unique properties has inspired researchers to try to invent other two-dimensional (2D) materials. After considerable research effort, a distinct "beyond graphene" domain has been established, comprising the library of non-graphene 2D materials. It is significant that some 2D non-graphene materials possess solid advantages over their predecessor, such as having a direct band gap, and therefore are highly promising for a number of applications. These applications are not limited to nano- and opto-electronics, but have a strong potential in biosensing technologies, as one example. However, since most of the 2D non-graphene materials have been newly discovered,…

Electron-electron interactions in artificial graphene

2012

Recent advances in the creation and modulation of graphenelike systems are introducing a science of ``designer Dirac materials''. In its original definition, artificial graphene is a man-made nanostructure that consists of identical potential wells (quantum dots) arranged in an adjustable honeycomb lattice in the two-dimensional electron gas. As our ability to control the quality of artificial graphene samples improves, so grows the need for an accurate theory of its electronic properties, including the effects of electron-electron interactions. Here we determine those effects on the band structure and on the emergence of Dirac points.

Highly untangled multiwalled carbon nanotube@polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane ionic hybrids: Synthesis, characterization and nonlinear optical pr…

2015

Abstract Highly de-bundled multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) polymer nanohybrids were obtained via ionic assembling of a novel POSS-polyimidazolium-ionic liquid (POSS = polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes) with oxidized MWCNTs. The synthesis, accomplished by a simple bilayer chloroform/water metathetical reaction process, was promoted by the high surfactant properties of POSS-imidazolium-polyionic liquid, which assisted the effective de-bundling, dispersion and purification of the as prepared POSS@MWCNT polymers in organic media, via a surface coating mechanism. The presence of remarkably intense radial breathing modes (RBMs) in Raman spectra, both in solution and as solid, corroborates…
