Guidelines and Conceptual Design of the Grounding System of the DTT Experimental Facility
2022
The Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) is an experimental nuclear fusion reactor currently under construction at the ENEA research center in Frascati and whose first plasma is expected in 2025. The present article shows the conceptual philosophy and the guidelines behind the design of the grounding system of the DTT. The article focuses on the main target of the grounding system and on the main technical standards to refer to for the design.
Grounding concepts as emerging clusters in multiple conceptual spaces
2018
A novel framework for symbol grounding in artificial agents is presented, which relies on the key idea that concepts "emerge" implicitly at the perceptual level as clusters of points with similar features forming homogeneous regions in multiple perceptual Conceptual Spaces (pCS). Such spaces describe percepts such as color, texture, shape, and position that in turn are the properties of the objects populating the agent's environment. Objects are represented in a suitable object Conceptual Space where all their features are composed together again using clustering in pCSs. Symbols will be learned from such a tensor space. A detailed description of both the framework and its theoretical found…
Visually-Grounded Language Model for Human-Robot Interaction
2010
Visually grounded human-robot interaction is recognized to be an essential ingredient of socially intelligent robots, and the integration of vision and language increasingly attracts attention of researchers in diverse fields. However, most systems lack the capability to adapt and expand themselves beyond the preprogrammed set of communicative behaviors. Their linguistic capabilities are still far from being satisfactory which make them unsuitable for real-world applications. In this paper we will present a system in which a robotic agent can learn a grounded language model by actively interacting with a human user. The model is grounded in the sense that meaning of the words is linked to a…
Earth resistance measurements in urban contexts: Problems and possible solutions
2017
Both EN 50522 and IEEE Std. 81 propose the Fall of Potential Method (FPM) to carry out the measurement of the resistance to earth of an Earthing System (ES). However, in urban areas, the recommended distances between the ES and auxiliary electrodes are not easy to respect, due to the presence of buildings and tarmac. Moreover, unknown buried metallic parts, as well as the interconnection among the ESs made by the Distributor System Operator, could modify the earth potential profile of the area, affecting the measurement results. In this paper, the issues that could affect the measurement result if FPM is used in an urban context are presented. A parametric analysis, carried out with Comsol …
On the distribution of lightning current among interconnected grounding systems in medium voltage grids
2018
This paper presents the results of a first investigation on the effects of lightning stroke on medium voltage installations' grounding systems, interconnected with the metal shields of the Medium Voltage (MV) distribution grid cables or with bare buried copper ropes. The study enables us to evaluate the distribution of the lightning current among interconnected ground electrodes in order to estimate if the interconnection, usually created to reduce ground potential rise during a single-line-to-ground fault, can give place to dangerous situations far from the installation hit by the lightning stroke. Four different case studies of direct lightning stroke are presented and discussed: (1) two …
