Assessment of the mechanism of elemental incorporation into bivalve shells (Arctica islandica) based on elemental distribution at the microstructural…

2014

Abstract To address the mechanism of elemental incorporation into shells of the bivalve Arctica islandica , we performed two-dimensional elemental mapping of Sr, Mg, and S at a ∼3 μm spatial resolution using electron microprobe. These elemental distributions were precisely compared to the shell microstructure. The Sr distribution was intimately linked to the S concentration and/or shell microstructure. Sr showed a clear annual pattern with higher values at the annual growth lines and lower values in annual growth increments. The Sr and S concentrations were higher near sub-annual growth lines than in the adjacent regions, which were dominated by acicular microstructure (middle shell layer) …

Effects of post-growth annealing on structural and compositional properties of the Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al surface and its relevance for the surface electron…

2009

In this study we investigate the influence of post-growth annealing on different Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al samples. We find strong changes in the geometric surface structure as well as in the element specific concentrations during the annealing process. These irreversible changes go in hand with characteristic changes in the electron spin polarization (ESP) at the surface: as observed in Cinchetti et al (2007 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 40 1544), the iron buffered sample shows the largest spin polarization at the Fermi level. The latter remains positive as a consequence of the reduced density of states for the minority carriers due to the predicted minority gap, which can be clearly seen for all samples …

Optical properties of silver halide fibres: ageing effects

1996

The relation between the structure of fibres extruded from mixed silver halides and their IR optical losses and luminescence properties is studied. The recently established ageing effect of the considerable growth of mean grain size of the fibre's polycrystalline structure (typically from 20 to 1000 nm in two years) is correlated with IR and luminescence measurements. IR spectra measured in the interval show growth of the concentrations of molecular impurities. The luminescence measurements are used for the characterization of the fibre's structure ordering. The luminescence decay kinetics is analysed theoretically in terms of the diffusion-controlled recombination of spatially well-correla…

Alginate-based coatings charged with hydroxyapatite and quercetin for fresh-cut papaya shelf life

2022

In this study, the effect of alginate-based coatings charged with quercetin glycoside compounds and hydroxyapatite/quercetin glycoside compounds (HA/QUE) on the microbiological quality, and on bioactive compounds of fresh-cut papaya, was evaluated for 14 days at 6 degrees C. Alginate coatings with hydroxyapatite/quercetin showed a high capability to slow down the growth of all microbiological parameters investigated. At the end of cold storage, the total bacteria count in papaya samples covered with HA/QUE alginate coating was 4.8 log CFU g(-1) which is significantly lower (P < 0.05) than 8.3 log CFU g(-1) for uncoated samples. Total carotenoids' percentage decrease, at the end of storag…

Treatment results of acromegaly as analyzed by different criteria.

1997

Results of treatment of acromegaly are often incomparable due to the different criteria which have been used for defining cure or control of disease. At the present time it is widely accepted, that the main criteria of cure must be normalization of IGF-1 and a GH in the OGTT2 ng/ml. In this retrospective study we investigated the endocrinological results of 56 patients, who were surgically treated because of a GH-producing pituitary adenoma, by different criteria. Twelve of our patients had had additional medical treatment after surgery, two received radiotherapy. At a mean follow-up of 34 months after surgery 66% of patients had a basal GH5 ng/ml, 64% had a GH in the OGTT2 ng/ml and 73% ha…

The visceral adiposity index is associated with insulin sensitivity and IGF-I levels in adults with growth hormone deficiency

2016

The visceral adiposity index, based on anthropometric and metabolic parameters, has been shown to be related to adipose tissue function and insulin sensitivity. We aimed to evaluate the performance of the visceral adiposity index in adult patients with growth hormone deficiency. We enrolled 52 patients(mean age 51 ± 13 years) with newly diagnosed growth hormone deficiency and 50 matched healthy subjects as controls at baseline. At baseline and after 12 and 24 months of treatment we evaluated anthropometric measures, lipid profile, glucose and insulin during an oral glucose tolerance test, hemoglobin A1c, homeostasis model assessment estimate of insulin resistance, quantitative insulin sensi…

3D microvascular architecture of pre-cancerous lesions and invasive carcinomas of the colon.

2001

Despite the significance of tumour neoangiogenesis and the extensive knowledge on the molecular basis of blood vessel formation currently no quantitative data exist on the 3D microvascular architecture in human primary tumours and their precursor lesions. This prompted us to examine the 3D vascular network of normal colon mucosa, adenomas and invasive carcinomas by means of quantitative microvascular corrosion casting. Fresh hemicolectomy specimens from 20 patients undergoing cancer or polyposis coli surgery were used for corrosion casting, factor VIII and VEGF immunostaining. In addition, immunostaining was done on colorectal tissue from 33 patients with metastatic and non-metastatic carci…

Crescere in terre di mafia

2014

Controversies on the role of Th17 in cancer: a TGF-β-dependent immunosuppressive activity?

2012

The immune system has important roles in limiting the spread of cancer and shaping the tumor microenvironment. Although the contributions of T helper 17 (Th17) cells (a subtype of CD4(+) T lymphocytes) to autoimmunity and allergy response are well known, their roles in cancer remain ambiguous. Despite adoptive transfer studies indicating that mouse Th17 cells support anticancer immunity, the Th17 cells that naturally infiltrate experimental tumors appear to have a tumor-promoting effect. These contradictory properties can be related to the high degree of plasticity inherent in Th17 cells and their capacity to differentiate into tumoricidal Th1-like cells. Mouse Th17 cells induced by transfo…

Stat3 and Gfi-1 Transcription Factors Control Th17 Cell Immunosuppressive Activity via the Regulation of Ectonucleotidase Expression

2012

International audience; Although Th17 cells are known to promote tissue inflammation and autoimmunity, their role during cancer progression remains elusive. Here, we showed that in vitro Th17 cells generated with the cytokines IL-6 and TGF-β expressed CD39 and CD73 ectonucleotidases, leading to adenosine release and the subsequent suppression of CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell effector functions. The IL-6-mediated activation of the transcription factor Stat3 and the TGF-β-driven downregulation of Gfi-1 transcription factor were both essential for the expression of ectonucleotidases during Th17 cell differentiation. Stat3 supported whereas Gfi-1 repressed CD39 and CD73 expression by binding to thei…
