Lingual mucosal grafts for anterior urethroplasty: a review

2009

We critically reviewed recent reports of lingual mucosal grafts (LMGs) for substitution urethroplasty, to determine the efficacy and complications of this approach. Only a few centres have published the short or interim outcome of LMG urethroplasty. These studies dealt mainly with surgical techniques and harvesting LMGs, emphasizing the comparison of different intra-oral donor sites. The preliminary results seem to be encouraging for the safety and efficacy of LMG urethroplasty. When compared with other substitute materials, LMG give equally good results with much easier harvesting and minimal donor site morbidity. Thus, lingual mucosa is most likely to become an alternative to oral mucosa …

Segmental anatomy of the vastus lateralis: guidelines for muscle-sparing flap harvest.

2014

Background: The vastus lateralis muscle is a versatile donor site for pedicled and free flaps that, despite great potential, remains unpopular. Although the muscle is classically described as a single belly, evidence exists for a more complex morphology. The aim of this study was to investigate the segmental anatomy of the vastus lateralis muscle and the feasibility of selective flap harvest. Methods: Ten cadaveric lower limbs were investigated. Muscular partitions were identified according to morphologic architecture, vascular supply, and nerve supply; guidelines for selective flap harvest were described. Twenty-three segmental vastus lateralis (n = 14) or chimeric anterolateral thigh-vast…

An algorithm to improve outcomes of radial forearm flap donor site

2017

Background: Due to the high rate of donor site complications the Radial Forearm Flap (RFF) has lost ground in favor of the Antero-lateral tight flap (ALT) and other flaps. We have designed a reconstruction algorithm for reconstruction of its donor site. The goal of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the impact of this algorithm on RFF donor site compli- cation rates. Methods: The authors analyzed retrospectively 31 patients who underwent free radial fore- arm flap reconstruction between November 2009 and May 2013. Donor site complications were compared with data from patients treated before introdutction of the algorithm. Within the group were compared patients in which the flap was…

COASTAL ACCESSIBILITY AS VULNERABILITY FACTOR FOR PATELLA ULYSSIPONENSIS GMELIN, 1791 IN A MEDITERRANEAN MPA

2023

Average density of Patella ulyssiponensis Gmelin, 1791 was correlated with costal accessibility and tourists’ density. The results highlighted that the accessibility could have a greater weight than the MPA regulation, in absence of patrolling, on the vulnerability of this sensitive species.

Energy Harvesting Powered Packet Transmissions in Duty-Cycled WSNs: A DTMC Analysis

2017

Energy harvesting (EH) promises an extended lifetime for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), supplying sensor nodes with accumulated energy from natural sources. Different from battery powered sensors, nodes in EH-enabled WSNs are equipped with an energy harvesting accessory in order to extract energy from surrounding sources. Based upon the harvested energy, sensor nodes perform data exchange activities. In this paper, we develop two discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) models to analyze the performance of packet transmissions in such a WSN while employing a generic synchronous medium access control (MAC) protocol. Using the proposed DTMC models, we investigate the effect of EH over a specific s…

On Energy Harvesting Using Piezoelectric Transducer with Two-Port Model Under Force Excitation

2019

Piezoelectric (PE) materials are functional materials that can be used for transforming mechanical stress into electrical energy, that can then be stored and used for powering other devices. In this paper, we provide experimental investigation of PE transducers used for energy harvesting under external force-controlled excitation. The lumped parameter electromechanical model (LPEM) has been assumed and brought into a generalized two-port network notation. Laboratory experiments using a universal test machine (UTM) were performed and used for the parameter identification of the model. The two-port model formulation is validated by comparing results of numerical simulations and experimental d…

Harvesting rainfall energy by means of piezoelectric transducer

2013

In this paper a detailed study on the piezoelectric energy harvesting of rainfall is presented. Different features have been taken into account in order to define the limits in this energy harvesting. Only commercial transducers have been considered: a lead zirconate titanate and polyvinylidene difluoride transducer.

A Magnetostrictive Electric Power Generator for energy harvesting from traffic: Design and experimental verification

2015

In the last decades, the growth in energy demand, the decrease of fossil fuels available in the market and the impact of anthropogenic factors on climate change has given new impulse to research on renewable energy systems, particularly those known as energy harvesting devices (EHDs) [1]. A large number of EHDs have been proposed, using different operating principle [1-4]. Among them, piezoelectric and magnetostrictive seem to be particularly suitable for the application in EHD. In these materials the application of external mechanical stress induces a change in the level of magnetization and therefore an electromotive force (emf) can be generated and collected in order to produce electrica…

Lhca5 interaction with plant photosystem I

2006

AbstractIn the outer antenna (LHCI) of higher plant photosystem I (PSI) four abundantly expressed light-harvesting protein of photosystem I (Lhca)-type proteins are organized in two heterodimeric domains (Lhca1/Lhca4 and Lhca2/Lhca3). Our cross-linking studies on PSI-LHCI preparations from wildtype Arabidopsis and pea plants indicate an exclusive interaction of the rarely expressed Lhca5 light-harvesting protein with LHCI in the Lhca2/Lhca3-site. In PSI particles with an altered LHCI composition Lhca5 assembles in the Lhca1/Lhca4 site, partly as a homodimer. This flexibility indicates a binding-competitive model for the LHCI assembly in plants regulated by molecular interactions of the Lhca…
