Post-bronchoscopy fatal endobronchial hemorrhage in a woman with bronchopulmonary mucormycosis: a case report

2010

Abstract Introduction During infection, Mucorales fungi invade major blood vessels, leading to extensive necrosis, and in cases of extensive pulmonary disease, bleeding into the lungs may occur. Case presentation We report an unexpected event of post-bronchoscopy fatal endobronchial hemorrhage in a 62-year-old HIV-negative Italian woman with well controlled diabetes mellitus who presented with diffuse cavitated pulmonary lesions. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed bilateral obstruction of the segmental bronchi. Fatal massive bleeding occurred after standard biopsy procedures. Histologic examination showed that the hyphae were more deeply colored by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) than by other stains…

The Role of Erythropoietin in Neuroprotection: Therapeutic Perspectives

2007

Nervous system diseases are very complex conditions comprising a large variety of local and systemic responses. Several therapeutic agents interfering with all or in part the biochemical steps that ultimately cause neuronal death have been demonstrated to be neuroprotective in preclinical models. However, all the agents so far investigated have inexorably failed in the phase III trials carried out. A large body of evidence suggests that the hormone erythropoietin (EPO), besides its well-known hematopoietic action, exerts beneficial effects in the central nervous system. EPO's effect has been assessed in several experimental models of brain and spinal cord injury thus becoming a serious cand…

Long-term risk for major bleeding during extended oral anticoagulant therapy for first unprovoked venous thromboembolism: A systematic review and met…

2021

BACKGROUND The long-term risk for major bleeding in patients receiving extended (beyond the initial 3 to 6 months) anticoagulant therapy for a first unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE) is uncertain. PURPOSE To determine the incidence of major bleeding during extended anticoagulation of up to 5 years among patients with a first unprovoked VTE, overall, and in clinically important subgroups. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception to 23 July 2021. STUDY SELECTION Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and prospective cohort studies reporting major bleeding among patients with a first unprovoked VTE who were to receive oral anticoagu…

Ahmed valve, suture-less implantation: A new approach to an easier technique.

2013

Purpose Tissue adhesives have been used in ophthalmology instead of sutures to minimize the operating time. This case series investigated the effectiveness and safety of use of cyanoacrylate in Ahmed valve implantation through pars plana for refractory glaucoma. Patients and methods Seventeen eyes of 17 patients with refractory glaucoma underwent Ahmed valve scleral suture-less implantation through pars plana with a cyanoacrylate suture of the plate. Refractory glaucoma was defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) ≥ 21 mm Hg with antiglaucoma eye drops, good adherence to treatment, and no previous glaucoma surgery. IOP control and development of complications were evaluated during the follow-u…

Delayed Suprachoroidal Hemorrhage After Pars Plana Vitrectomy: Five-Year Results of a Retrospective Multicenter Cohort Study

2015

Purpose To determine the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage after vitrectomy. Design Retrospective multicenter cohort study. Methods All consecutive patients who underwent primary vitrectomy, from January 2009 to December 2014, at 4 tertiary vitreoretinal centers in Italy were enrolled. Patient demographics and systemic, ophthalmic, operative, and postoperative data from all centers were extracted from the electronic record system using standardized data collection forms. All eyes that developed delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage within 48 hours of the end of the vitrectomy were identified as the delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage group; all other eyes …

Pars-Plana-Vitrektomie bei diabetischen Traktionsamotiones mit Foramen

2000

PURPOSE: To evaluate results and prognostic factors of pars-plana vitrectomy (ppv) using membrane peeling and C2F6-gas for diabetic traction retinal detachments with a hole. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the healing course of 84 eyes, which were treated in this way consecutively (follow-up 6-32 month). C2F6 was always used in case of a retinal hole at the posterior pole or in the upper part of the eye. The influence of HBA1c, type of diabetes, preoperative visual acuity, preoperative laser-coagulation and macular status over treatment results and rate of complications were studied using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Preoperatively 56% of the eyes showed premacul…

(A)symptomatic necrotizing arteritis of the female genital tract.

2000

Abstract Aims: The vasculitides represent a heterogenous set of disorders that differ in prognosis and response to therapy. Beside systemic vasculitides, the development of localized forms of arteritis is well known though uncommon and the etiopathogenesis is not yet definitely clear. Methods: Patients with necrotizing arteritis of the female genital tract proven by histology are studied in a retrospective analysis. Results: Three cases of necrotizing arteritis with histological features of panarteritis nodosa apparently confined to the female genital tract are presented. None of these patients had prior history of systemic vasculitis. The acute necrotizing vasculitis was confined only to t…
