From Conservation to Revitalization. Ambiguous and Critical Conditions in the Heritage Conservation Experiences of Erice

2022

The plans and the evolutionary trends of policies and practices implemented in Erice old town, in the south of Italy, in the western part of Sicily, can be considered a case study of total conservation as highly representative of Italian urban planning of the last 60 years. This paper also highlights the historical and cultural context in which the Gubbio Charter (issued in 1960) is affirmed; i.e. the most appropriate approaches to historical urban centres; what we can learn from Erice’s integral co…

PATRIMONIO CULTURALE E MARGINALITÀ. LA PANDEMIA DELLA SOLITUDINE. QUALE RIGENERAZIONE?

2021

We start from the assumption that culture is what man assimilates, modifies and transforms, to which he contributes with his work, adding to and preserving the historical heritage. The sum of heritage diversities and values gives cultural uniqueness to the coexistence of the communities that make up each territory. Our main task, the task of each one of us who with an educated eye understands the meaning and value of heritage, must be directed towards committing ourselves not only to be actors in the present historical moment in which such testimonies survive, but to be authors of practices of preservation and enhancement. We cannot learn culture just by looking at its symbols, but by livin…

Digitization Practice in Latvia: Achievements and Trends of Development

2011

The 1980s are characterized by rapid development of digitization process and research of digital libraries. In 1994 Latvia was also involved in this process with the first attempt to digitize the materials of high demand and in poor physical condition at the Latvian Academic Library. In 1998 the digitization process was launched at the National Library of Latvia. The study, the first results of which are presented in this publication, is made to analyze the history of digitization in Latvia, and to evaluate the achievements of these activities. Up to now the development of digitization process has been poorly documented, therefore the empirical sources are unpublished documents (project rep…

3D survey and modelling of the main portico of the Cathedral of Monreale

2018

3D survey and modelling of Cultural Heritage allow to store a great deal of 3D data that can be managed for different purposes. 3D models can be used for documentation, restoration and knowledge of historic architectures and monuments. In this work, a 3D survey of the main portico of the Cathedral of Monreale (Palermo, Italy) was carried out. The paper presents the data acquisition process and the 3D modelling phase. The work is aimed to reconstruct a 3D model that could be used also to set up an HBIM (Heritage or Historic Building Information Modelling) of the main portico. The result of this study could be considered as a first test to implement an HBIM platform for the whole monumental c…

Investigation of Wood Materials by Combined Application of X-ray and Neutron Imaging Techniques*

2014

Abstract Conservation of cultural heritage is extremely important not only from a cultural point of view, but also from a practical one. It is our duty to pass on to future generations the cultural heritage left to us by our ancestors. Wood is one of the most common materials used to generate works of art which are in a state of constant change and/or deterioration. In order to optimize the knowledge of artworks together with their conservation, it is necessary to use the most advanced scientific and technological tools. In the following paper, we will show the tomographic results which can be achieved by application of complementary techniques based on the combined use of X-ray and neutron…
