Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyze the factors influencing the MOOC supply level. Specifically, this paper analyzes certain internal and strategic factors associated with universities, such as prestige, public or private status, age, size (measured by the number of faculty members or students) and region. Design/methodology: We apply a descriptive methodology and then use multivariate analysis to test five hypotheses related to the institutional profile of 151 universities in 29 countries. Empirical evidence is provided from universities offering MOOCs through the four of the most commonly used private global platforms that emerged as part of the booming MOOC movement (Udacity, Co…
Distance Learning during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Resources, Obstacles, and Emotional Implications for Italian Students in Higher Education
2022
The study examined how 807 undergraduate Italian students coped with synchronous, asynchronous, and blended learning environments during the COVID-19 pandemic. Strengths and weaknesses of online learning were collected via an electronic platform (SurveyMonkey) and then categorized by grounded theory analysis using ATLAS.ti 8.0 software. The results showed technical, practical, relational, organizational, and transformative features of online learning emerged, differentiated in synchronous, asynchronous, and blended modes. Emotional aspects also affected the evaluation of distance learning because depression and fear were more frequent among the students who found distance learning to be an …
International student mobility in Southern-Latin Europe: beyond the EU logics, towards a new space
2018
This paper discusses international student mobility (ISM) in Southern-Latin Europe, specifically Italy, Portugal, and Spain, analysing the inflow of international students as reflected in the UNESCO, OECD and European Commission databases. Only recently Italy, Portugal and Spain, as latecomers, have become more actively involved in ISM dynamics. This trend has been a response to EU pressures to internationalization, instrumented through the consolidation of the Bologna process and the need to build a common space of higher education. The analysis shows that at the intra-European level Italy, Portugal and Spain share similar ISM patterns; however, in the global context other logics shape ISM…
Pathways to higher education for first and second generation immigrants in France, Switzerland and Canada: how educational tracks and aspirations mat…
2014
Despite their different histories as countries of immigration, Switzerland, France and Canada all have a sizeable immigrant population, some of which do experience obstacles in their educational and professional careers. However, both access rates of immigrant students as well as institutional routes to higher education vary remarkably between the three countries. On the one hand, France and Switzerland offer both academic and vocational routes to higher education, whereas academic routes prevail in Canada. On the other hand, immigrant students are underrepresented in Swiss and French higher education, while they generally seem to be much more successful in Canada. In this paper we wish to …
How do different pathways to higher education foster social mobility for males and females: A comparison of different tracks to higher education in S…
2014
International audience; Over the past decades, educational policy implementations in France and Switzerland have increased the eligibility of those completing (upper or post compulsory) secondary education to access higher or tertiary education, by introducing vocationally orientated programs on the upper secondary level that offer access to higher education. Such policies should help to reduce some of the well-known inequalities in the educational system by improving educational achievement of disadvantaged groups such as students with an immigrant background or those coming from low socioeconomic and cultural households. In this paper we wish to clarify not only if, but also how - through…
Applying Dynamic Performance Management to foster collaborative governance in Higher Education: A conceptual framework
2020
Higher education is characterized by growing complexity and uncertainty, which highlight how wicked issues cannot be addressed by one organization acting alone. A collaborative governance approach is here proposed to tackle these issues. Such a perspective has been implemented widely, from public services design and delivery to infrastructure development and environmental protection. Although higher education is not less critical than the above areas, less attention has been paid to collaborative governance in this feld. To foster collaborative governance in higher education, based on a literature review, we develop a conceptual framework using the dynamic performance management approach. T…
Prevention and Mitigation of Rural Higher Education Dropout in Colombia: A Dynamic Performance Management Approach.
2023
Background: Dropout in higher education is a socio-educational phenomenon that has the scope to limit the benefits of education as well as to widen social disparities. For this reason, governments have implemented various public policies for its prevention and mitigation. However, in rural populations, such policies have proven to be ineffective. The aim of this paper is to simulate public policy scenarios for the treatment of school dropout in rural higher education in Colombia from a Dynamic Performance Management approach. Methodology: To achieve the aim, a parameterised simulation model was designed with data from Colombian state entities in rural higher education. Five simulations were…
Enhancing the Performance of Chinese High Education Institutions through Collaborative Governance: A Dynamic Performance Management Approach
2021
With the development of the knowledge economy, knowledge generation and application has been a powerful engine for economic development and global competition. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are under great pressure to improve their performance in teaching, research and the third mission, to respond to the changing social needs actively. This doctoral thesis is aimed at proposing a framework to enhance the performance of Chinese HEIs through collaborative governance using a dynamic performance management approach. Based on a literature review of performance management in Chinese HEIs, a conceptual framework is proposed to enhance the performance of teaching, research and the third mis…
Adopting a Dynamic Performance Governance Approach to Frame Interorganizational Value Generation Processes into a University Third Mission Setting
2022
In recent years, the literature on Higher Education policy and management emphasized an increasingly entrepreneurial role played by Universities in contributing to the socio-economic development of their regional and local areas. Besides Education and Research, this crucial role identifies a Third Mission to be fulfilled by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), which entails social engagement, networking and collaboration with other stakeholders to generate sustainable community outcomes. This chapter introduces the use of the Dynamic Performance Governance approach to analyze the academic network value generation processes underlying Third Mission activities in Universities. The emerging f…
Student mobility: A systemic approach to preferential patterns in higher education
2022
The thesis is a collection of three essays with a “fil rouge”, namely the study of Italian student mobility, 2008 to 2017, analyzed systemically. The main objective of the thesis is to develop statistical methods suitable to identifying preferential mobility patterns starting from the micro-data of a mobility network and applying these methods to reveal preferential patterns of mobility among Italian students with a particular focus on students from Sicily. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that chain migration, within the framework of a network analysis, has been applied to the study of Italian student mobility. In each of the three chapters, there are data analysis tool…
