The diary of Antonio Desbrull y Boíl De Arenos's trip to Sicily offers the possibility to observe directly the perception of the sacred art of the author, characterized by an enlightened cultural profile, but far from the neoclassical taste that is the fundamental trait common to many of the contemporary travelers. Desbrull's testimony also allows us to examine some of the main religious buildings on the island, the works contained therein and the architectural decoration, an expression of a baroque taste that strikes and fascinates the author. La città di Palermo e la sua valle circostante sono un importante paesaggio storico irriguo, caratterizzato da strutture idrauliche sotterranee e da una lunga tradizione di sistemi di irrigazione ereditati dalla presenza islamica in Sicilia nel medioevo (IX-XI secolo). La “rivo- luzione verde” islamica ha radicalmente innovato i sistemi di irrigazione siciliani e questo portò all’introduzione e alla diffusione di nuove specie coltivate. From ancient times, due to a very favourable climate, and the presence of many pure water sources, the “Golden Valley” surrounding the city of Palermo saw the settlement of an elaborate system of rural farms, “industrial” buildings. During the XVI century, and especially towards the XVIII century, spending some time in the countryside became a real trend for the urbanized Sicilian aristocracy. Il progetto per il primo concorso, del 1884, redatto dall’allora giovanissimo Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857-1932), rivela una grande perizia progettuale che trasforma il complesso programma funzionale in un austero edificio in stile neofiorentino. Tras abandonar la Mancha el Júcar entra en el País Valenciano y a partir de su confluencia con el Cabriel, discurre primero encajado entre gargantas y luego sobre el llano aluvial de la Ribera, donde se le llama Xúquer. A ambos lados del río encontramos una toponimia –muchas veces poco transparente– que deriva de las características físicas de este río, de la protección ante sus avenidas, o de la vigilancia de los pasos o los caminos que lo atraviesan.
