Tourist destination network analysis: The ego network role
2017
This paper aims to analyse the different roles that enterprises have within a tourist destination by identifying the presence and possible role of leaders within the system. The Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a tool that offers a greater degree of understanding of the operation of the destination. The map of commercial relations between the leading players of tourist supply can provide greater insight into the main relations existing between enterprises and the principles that ensure and regulate operation. In keeping with this objective and building on the results of a previous paper (Iannolino and Ruggieri, 2012), the authors have focused their attention on the role of some enterprises …
Tourist choice, competitive tourism markets and the effect of a tourist tax on producers revenues
2022
We propose a model for the tourism sector assuming basically two markets, one for tourist services and the other for accommodation. These sub-markets are considered as separate but interrelated. The nature of the feedback is determined by a vertical complementarity between tourist services and lodging. We obtain the optimal solution of the tourist choice problem, the primary demand for tourist services and the derived demand for overnight stays. Then, we focus on the equilibrium outcomes assuming perfectly competitive tourism markets. We do not address the externalities caused by tourism activities. Consequently, we move away from efficiency by introducing a tax on overnight stays and insp…

Having more reliable statistics is essential for policy-makers to be able to make effective decisions. Nevertheless, measuring the number of tourists in a given destination is not an easy task. After reviewing the main problems affecting official statistics on tourism, this paper proposes a general framework by formalizing a theoretical model in which tourism nights and trips in a given destination are broken down into observed and unobserved components, according to the European system of tourism statistics. The main approaches related to the measurement of unobserved tourism are discussed, and some empirical findings in Sicily (Italy) are presented in order to highlight the actual magnitu…
Motivation and personality traits for choosing religious tourism. A research on the case of Medjugorje
2013
Religion has long been a primary motivation for journeys and it is considered the oldest non-economic reason for travelling. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the reasons tourists choose to travel to sacred sites, with the specific aim of discovering relationships between personality traits and motivations for religious travel. Participating in the research were 679 Italian travellers to Medjugorje sanctuary, who completed the travel motivation scale and big five questionnaire. The results show that motivation is focused prevalently on the need for discovery in men and socialisation in women. Multiple regression analyses demonstrated that personality traits are predictive of motiv…
Representation of Cruise: Cruisers and Noncruisers Cross Views
2014
The article demonstrates the interest in using social representations as a tool of analysis in the representation of cruise for cruisers and noncruisers. The main objective of this study is to identify and to compare social representations of cruise for these groups. The article is based on a review of the social representation theory literature. Using multiapproach methods focused on organizing principles, the results indicate some resemblance and many differences between both representations. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed before the article concludes with limitations and directions for future research. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Environmental sustainability in restaurants. A systematic review and future research agenda on restaurant adoption of green practices
2022
The adverse impact that restaurants have on the environment has received widespread attention in the last decade from both practice and academia. The current study aims to find, catalog, and synthesize the research body addressing green issues in the restaurant industry. We utilize the systematic literature review method to identify and analyze 68 research articles addressing environmental unsustainability problems in the restaurant industry. The research profile identifies the time trends of publication, key journals, countries studied, methods used, and restaurant types discussed in these studies. The results indicate that green restaurant research has grown exponentially recently and is …
