Star Image Identification and Characterization on Astrographic Plates

1994

The automatic identification and characterization of star images has great value for the preliminary analysis and measurement of astrographic plates. Our group at Valencia Observatory is using a small 2-D stage and a CCD camera under computer control to perform systematic measurements of bright asteroid plates. We are also applying this method to the processing of astrographic plates with crowded stellar fields and non-stellar objects in collaboration with the Pulkovo Observatory.

Conservation Work on an Ancient Sicilian Processional Banner: Preliminary Analyses and in Situ Restoration

2013

Abstract Before carrying out the conservation work on the gilded wooden frame of the processional banner coming from Tusa, Sicily, some preliminary diagnostic analyses were conducted in order to identify materials that made up the wooden frame. After a micro-sampling phase, a thin section of the wooden support allowed to identify the timber as linden wood (basswood). The X-Ray Fluorescence analysis confirmed the presence of a thin layer of primer made of plaster and animal glue covered with a red bolus primer, used for the gilding process. The restoration was carried out during the opening hours of the museum, allowing visitors to be informed on the restoration phases.

Last trends in pesticide residue determination by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry

2014

Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) is as an excellent analytical tool in the determination of pesticides. Multiresidue analysis of these compounds at trace levels is one of the oldest analytical schemes within environmental and food safety. However, the issue of “pesticide residue determination” is still a hot topic for the analytical community. This review discusses current approaches and recent advances in using LC–MS for pesticide identification and quantification. We outline how MS has influenced the sample preparation process. We critically assess and compare various mass spectrometers, highlighting their strengths and limitations. We, then, review the main applications of…

The genusThymus(Lamiaceae) in Sicily

2015

An update on the taxonomy and geographic distribution of the genus Thymus in Sicily is given. This study is based on literature, herbarium and field investigations. In total, five taxa belonging to Thymus sect. Serpyllum (Th. richardii subsp. nitidus, Th. longicaulis and Th. praecox subsp. parvulus) and Th. sect. Hyphodromi (Th. spinulosus and Th. paronychioides) occur in Sicily. For each one, information about taxonomy, habitat, phenology, chromosome number and distribution are provided. Furthermore, the name Thymus pedicillatus Lojac. is here typified. Finally, an analytical key for the identification of the studied taxa is proposed.

Transcriptome profiling of citrus fruit response to huanglongbing disease.

2010

Huanglongbing (HLB) or "citrus greening" is the most destructive citrus disease worldwide. In this work, we studied host responses of citrus to infection with Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CaLas) using next-generation sequencing technologies. A deep mRNA profile was obtained from peel of healthy and HLB- affected fruit. It was followed by pathway and protein-protein network analysis and quantitative real time PCR analysis of highly regulated genes. We identified differentially regulated pathways and constructed networks that provide a deep insight into the metabolism of affected fruit. Data mining revealed that HLB enhanced transcription of genes involved in the light reactions of phot…

Identification of stiffness, dissipation and input parameters of multi degree of freedom civil systems under unmeasured base excitations

2009

A time domain dynamic identification technique based on a statistical moment approach has been formulated for civil systems under base random excitations in the linear state. This technique is based on the use of classically damped models characterized by a mass proportional damping. By applying the Itô stochastic calculus, special algebraic equations that depend on the statistical moments of the response can be obtained. These equations can be used for the dynamic identification of the mechanical parameters that define the structural model, in the case of unmeasured input as well, and the identification of the input itself. Furthermore, the above equations demonstrate the possibility of id…

An output-only stochastic parametric approach for the identification of linear and nonlinear structures under random base excitations: Advances and c…

2014

In this paper a time domain output-only Dynamic Identification approach for Civil Structures (DICS) first formulated some years ago is reviewed and presented in a more generalized form. The approach in question, suitable for multi- and single-degrees-of-freedom systems, is based on the statistical moments and on the correlation functions of the response to base random excitations. The solving equations are obtained by applying the Itô differential stochastic calculus to some functions of the response. In the previous version ([21] Cavaleri, 2006; [22] Benfratello et al., 2009), the DICS method was based on the use of two classes of models (Restricted Potential Models and Linear Mass Proport…

MoSi2 laser cladding—elaboration, characterisation and addition of non-stabilized ZrO2 powder particles

2003

International audience; The cladding process using laser beam radiation comprises different operational regimes, depending on the involved lasers (usually CO2 or Nd:YAG) and materials. A series of experiments has been carried out to investigate Nd:YAG laser cladding using MoSi2 powder. Procedures and operating parameters for producing clad layers has been developed and their properties evaluated. The feasibility of the laser cladding technique, using a high power Nd:YAG laser, by projecting MoSi2 powder on steel substrate was demonstrated. The results indicate a low density of cracks, elevated powder catchment efficiency (between 65 and 90%) and hardness values around 1200–1300 HV. Our goal…

Methods of Digital Hilbert Optics in the Analysis and Objects’ Recognition

2016

This paper describes methods on how to increase the effectiveness of objects’ pictures identification based on correlation methods. The main concept of increasing the discriminant effectiveness is based on highlighting of characteristic points of recognized objects by applying Hilbert transformations. Study of the effectiveness of Digital Hilber Optics (DHO) have been performed on a set of aircrafts, whose models rendered first as binary images, and then as grayscale. It has been performed a very detailed analysis of requirements on resources of information system’s which would in a real world support the discriminatory decision of objects’ class for which the sample database has been creat…

A new paradigm for pattern classification: Nearest Border Techniques

2013

Published version of a chapter in the book: AI 2013: Advances in Artificial Intelligence. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-03680-9_44 There are many paradigms for pattern classification. As opposed to these, this paper introduces a paradigm that has not been reported in the literature earlier, which we shall refer to as the Nearest Border (NB) paradigm. The philosophy for developing such a NB strategy is as follows: Given the training data set for each class, we shall first attempt to create borders for each individual class. After that, we advocate that testing is accomplished by assigning the test sample to the class whose border it lies closest to…
