I luoghi della nascita: una ricerca-intervento sui fattori di rischio nelle madri migranti

2010

Pregnancy involves physical changes but also relational and affective ones. During the nine months’ period and in the months following the birth, women develop a series of expectations and fantasies about themselves and their child. The way women live their motherhood expresses, in addition, the cultural values, the myths, the rules society has transmitted to them. Then, birth can be considered as a cultural event with distinctive features. Moving from these considerations, we wondered how immigrant women live their experience of motherhood in a foreign country. We examined the way women reconstruct the history of their pregnancy in relation to their own maternal identity, the identity of t…

Intercultural Profiles and Adaptation Among Immigrant and Autochthonous Adolescents

2015

Few studies examine relationships between intercultural strategies and adaptation among adolescents using a person-oriented approach. Framed from an intercultural psychology perspective, this study used such an approach in order to examine the influence of intercultural profiles, patterns of relationships among variables related to intercultural strategies, on the adaptation of adolescents of both non-dominant and dominant groups. Two hundred and fifty-six adolescents living in Italy and aged from 14 to 18 participated to the study: 127 immigrants from Tunisia (males = 49.61%) and 129 autochthonous (males = 44.19%). Data were collected through self-report questionnaires. Using cluster analy…

“At the Western Palace”: The Dehumanization of Whiteness, Americanness, and Chinese-Americanness in Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior

2021

The dehumanization of whiteness in Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior (1976) inheres in the overarching ghosthood metaphor. While first generation Chinese American immigrants in The Woman Warrior attribute the power of transforming people into ghosts to the United States of America as a country, the questioning of a person’s humanity by calling them a “ghost” is not reserved for white people alone. Chinese American immigrants also run the risk of losing their humanity and becoming ghosts if they renounce their relatives and their heritage. The husband of the first-person narrator’s Chinese aunt, Moon Orchid, is an example of a Chinese American man, who turns into a ghost on account of…

Second-generation immigrants and factors that create challenges to enter Finnish labour market

2018

The aims of this study are to find out the most key factors that have negatively influenced second-generation immigrants with different foreign origins and ethnicities in their quest for job opportunities in the Finnish labour market. This stud‎y was done through qualitative research methods, which consisted of 15 second-generation immigrants, aged 18-35. These immigrants were divided into three main groups, which included European, Asian, and those of African backgrounds. This was to examine the role of ethnic aspects and to analyse the level of discrimination on different bases. The study was done through depth semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Scaffolding adult immigrant students in an EFL lesson

2012

Oppimisprosessi on luonteeltaan enemmänkin sosiaalinen kuin yksilöllinen. Tämä lähestymistapa on hyödyllinen myös aikuisille maahanmuuttajaopiskelijoille, koska sosiokulttuuriseen näkemykseen perustuvassa oppimisympäristössä he oppivat sekä oppiainetta että perehtyvät yhteiskunnan kulttuuriin, johon he sopeutuvat turvallisessa ja kannustavassa ympäristössä muiden seurassa. Sosiokulttuurisen teorian mukaan oppiminen on opettajan ja opiskelijoiden välisen vuorovaikutuksen seuraus, joka tapahtuu opiskelijoiden lähikehityksen vyöhykkeellä (the zone of proximal development, ZPD). Lähikehityksen vyöhyke on oppimisen todellisen kehitystason ja potentiaalisen kehitystason välinen ero. Toisin sanoen…
