Electrochemical detection of chloride ions using Ag-based electrodes obtained from compact disc

Abstract In this work electrochemical sensors fabricated from compact disc material (waste or new) are used to quantify chloride ions in different types of samples. All three electrodes, working, counter, and pseudo-reference electrodes, were fabricated from the compact disc and directly used. Different parameters were studied in order to demonstrate the possibility of using this waste material for efficient and low-cost electrochemical sensors. Chloride sensing performance was evaluated using linear scan voltammetry as the detection technique. A sensitivity of 0.174 mA mM−1 cm−2 with a limit of detection of 20 μM and excellent selectivity against many interferents was observed. Selectivity…

Experimental assessment of the shield-to-salt-fog properties of basalt and glass fiber reinforced composites in cork core sandwich panels applications

Abstract In this paper, the effect of salt-fog exposition on the mechanical behavior of sandwich panels having cork agglomerate core was investigated. In particular, the aim of this research work is to assess the shield function of unidirectional basalt and E-glass reinforced polymer on the aging and failure mechanism of the core when such class of material are destined to operate in hostile environments (e.g., marine environment). To do this, the manufactured sandwich panels were exposed up to 60 days to salt-fog environment, according to ASTM B 117 standard. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent heat transfer in curved pipes

Fully developed turbulent convective heat transfer in curved pipes was investigated by Direct Numerical Simulation for a friction velocity Reynolds number of 500, yielding bulk Reynolds numbers between 12 630 and ~17 350 according to the curvature (pipe radius/curvature radius). Three different curvatures were compared, i.e. 0 (straight pipe), 0.1 and 0.3. The Prandtl number was 0.86. The computational domain was a tract of pipe 5 diameters in length. A finite volume method was used, with multiblock structured grids of ~5.3x10E6 hexahedral volumes. Simulations were typically protracted for 20 LETOT’s starting from coarse-grid results. Until 2019, the thermo-hydraulic development of the EU-DEMO divertor was based on the “double-circuit” concept, in which two independent cooling circuits served by two different Primary Heat Transfer Systems were used to cool the Plasma-Facing Components (PFC) and the Cassette Body (CB). The European Facility for Industrial Transmutation (EFIT) is aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of transmutation process through the Accelerator Driven System (ADS) route on an industrial scale. The conceptual design of this reactor of about 400 MW thermal power is under development in the frame of the European EUROTRANS Integrated Project of the EURATOM Sixth Framework Program (FP6). EFIT is a pool-type reactor cooled by forced circulation of lead in the primary system where the heat is removed by steam generators installed inside the reactor vessel.
