Numerical assessment of the thermal-hydraulic performances of the ITER Blanket cooling system
This thesis has covered the main research activities carried out during the candidate Ph.D. course of the XXXI Cycle on “Energia e Tecnologie dell’Informazione - curriculum Fisica Tecnica e Ingegneria Nucleare” (Energy and Information Technologies - Applied Physics and Nuclear Engineering curriculum), held at the University of Palermo, in the time frame that goes from the end of 2015 to the end of 2018. In particular, it focusses on the activities carried out at the DEIM in cooperation with the ITER Organisation on the “Hydraulic Analysis of Blanket Cooling System” and it has aimed to investigate the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of the ITER blanket cooling system under nominal steady-state c…
On the Performance of A Long Draft Tube Self-Ingesting Reactor for Gas-Liquid Operations
2005
A novel self-inducing reactor, is presented. Its main features are a high aspect-ratio and a fairly narrow multiple-impeller draft tube, through which the gas phase is ingested and drowned down to the vessel bottom, where it is dispersed into the rising liquid. Preliminary experimental results on the apparatus performance are presented.
SHIPPING 4.0: GENERAL FRAMEWORK FOR A NEW CYBERSHIPPING ERA
2019
The fourth industrial revolution, also referred to as Industry 4.0, is a disruptive transformation process aimed which, by means of digital technologies, is substantially innovating the value creation processes in all industry contexts. With such premise, industry 4.0 is in particular expected to have a substantial impact on the maritime transport and shipping sectors, where smart ships and autonomous vessels are expected to be the building blocks of a new interconnected maritime ecosystem. The application of Industry 4.0 principles to the shipping domain (Shipping 4.0) has thus raised a scientific debate about the efficiency, sustainability, and safety of maritime transport. Recent researc…
Cellular and Molecular Signatures of Oxidative Stress in Bronchial Epithelial Cell Models Injured by Cigarette Smoke Extract
2022
Exposure of the airways epithelium to environmental insults, including cigarette smoke, results in increased oxidative stress due to unbalance between oxidants and antioxidants in favor of oxidants. Oxidative stress is a feature of inflammation and promotes the progression of chronic lung diseases, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Increased oxidative stress leads to exhaustion of antioxidant defenses, alterations in autophagy/mitophagy and cell survival regulatory mechanisms, thus promoting cell senescence. All these events are amplified by the increase of inflammation driven by oxidative stress. Several models of bronchial epithelial cells are used to study the molec…
The expected value of the traceability information
2015
Abstract Recent regulations on agri-food traceability prescribe traceability throughout the entire supply chain, in order to ensure consumers’ safety and product quality. This has led producers and retailers to consider the opportunity to improve the firm's reputation and consumer confidence through the implementation of traceability systems designed not only to satisfy the legal requirements, but also to track the quality of the products through the supply chain for optimization purposes. However the actual implementation of such systems depends on the possibility of gathering specific information related to the product quality. Nowadays, innovative and non invasive technologies such as th…
