Friction and Heat Transfer in Membrane Distillation Channels: An Experimental Study on Conventional and Novel Spacers

The results of an experimental investigation on pressure drop and heat transfer in spacer-filled plane channels, which are representative of Membrane Distillation units, are presented and discussed. Local and mean heat transfer coefficients were obtained by using Thermochromic Liquid Crystals and Digital Image Processing. An analysis on the injury events occurred to the employees in Sicilian hospitals from 2006 to 2008 was carried out, thanks to data filed in the INAL database “Flussi Informativi INAIL ISPESL REGIONI”. A frequency distribution of accidents and an investigation of injury events modality of occurrence have been performed according to ESAW codification. Data limitation and critical aspects have been highlighted in order to propose development in data management process.
CFD simulation of a mixing-sensitive reaction in unbaffled vessels

Stirred tanks are widely used in the process industry, often to carry out complex chemical reactions. In many of such cases the perfect mixing hypothesis is not applicable for modelling purposes, and more detailed modelling approaches are required in order to accurately describe the reactor behaviour. In this work a fully predictive modelling approach, based on Computational Fluid Dynamics, is developed.
