Over the Cuckoo’s Nest : Towards a Nordic Model of the Responsible University?

2019

AbstractThis concluding chapter takes stock of the major elements, both empirical and conceptual, that underpin the case chapters presented in the book. The chapter is organised in three distinct sections. First, addressing a largely scientific audience, the chapter attempts to make conceptual sense of the findings from an organisational theory perspective. Second, it shifts focus to the wider community of practitioners (policy makers, advisers, university managers and administrators, etc.) by shedding light on the practical implications of the volume’s core findings for both policy and practice. Third, the chapter once again addresses an academic audience by sketching out the road ahead re…

From risk assessment to in-context trajectory evaluation - GMOs and their social implications

2011

Purpose: Over the past twenty years, GMOs have raised enormous expectations, passionate political controversies, and an on-going debate on how should these technologies be assessed. Current risk-assessment procedures generally assess GMOs in terms of their potential risk of negatively affecting human health and the environment. Yet, is this risk-benefit approach appropriate to a deliver a robust assessment of GMOs? In this paper, we question the validity of current risk-assessment from both a social and an ecological perspective, and we elaborate an alternative approach, namely in-context trajectory evaluation Methods: This paper combines frame analysis, context analysis and eco-social anal…

Patterns of genomic instability in gastric cancer: clinical implications and perspectives

2007

In gastric cancer (GC) the loss of genomic stability represents a key molecular step that occurs early in the carcinogenesis process and creates a permissive environment for the accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations in tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes. It is widely accepted that GC can follow at least two major genomic instability pathways, microsatellite instability (MSI) and chromosome instability (CIN). MSI is responsible for a well-defined subset of GCs. CIN represents a more common pathway comprising heterogeneous subsets of GC. In addition to MSI and CIN, the CpG islands methylator phenotype (CIMP) plays an important role in gastric carcinogenesis. CIMP may lead to th…

Health Implications of Judo Training

2021

Although current physical activity (PA) guidelines regarding aerobic and anaerobic training are helpful for the population at large, many individuals prefer to engage in alternative forms of PA such as combat sports. As both a martial art and sport, judo is a physically demanding form of PA that potentially offers a novel experience, consequently leading to greater PA adherence. This study aimed to thoroughly search the existing literature to determine the health benefits of judo-specific training. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for original research studies. Only peer-reviewed studies that examined the effects of judo training in males and females aged 18–35 were included in the s…

Roles Of Stakeholders In Strategic Decision-Making Of Microfinance Organizations

2010

Microfinance organizations provide financial services to low income people. These organizations have been increasing dramatically worldwide. This increment calls attention for these organizations and their boards to make strategic decisions which enable them perform well and compete with each other. Based on literature, this paper identifies six types of microfinance stakeholders who sit on boards. These are clients, employees, government, donors, creditors and owners. This paper discusses the different roles of these stakeholders when they sit on boards of microfinance organizations and these roles are further explained to show how they contribute to the process of making strategic decisio…

Tarifas Portuárias: Um Estudo Comparativo entre os Sistemas Portuário Brasileiro e Espanhol

2014

The objective of this study is to investigate and document the system of port taxes in Brazil and Spain. To achieve this, we consulted the laws, rules and documents, and the websites of the main Brazilian and Spanish ports. The study is unprecedented and brings out a little researched topic in Brazil, which is the port taxes. The results show that the Spanish system is structured by defining the different types of taxes to be charges. While the tax for Brazilian ports is confusing to present a diversity of shapes and charging models. This study has practical implications as they search alercar and present a system that can serve as a model for Brazil. This is because the port rates have a d…

2020

Abstract Interest in studying information systems discontinuance has been increasing lately, yet there is no consensus on what it means. To improve the situation, we conduct a comprehensive review of current literature on IS discontinuance and identify 55 studies published during 1991–2017 that specifically focus on the topic. Our conceptual analysis disentangles the process, content, and context of the phenomenon, revealing that over the course of a typical IS lifecycle, IS discontinuance may materialize at least in five distinct forms: rejection, regressive discontinuance, quitting, temporary discontinuance, and replacement. After elaborating their distinctions, we discuss their theoretic…

Economía en juego

2019

[EN] This article describes an innovative strategy aimed at teaching the subject “Political Economy”, in the University Degree in Political Science and Public Administration. Although the central methodology revolves mainly around “gamification”, it also requires activities as traditional as “taking notes” or “paying attention during class”. In addition, it provides the added value of demanding to expand and structure the information collected on the basis of structuring descriptors (glossary). Through a RPG –economic and political espionage at Bandung Conference– students collect, complete and organize the information offered by the teacher and return it through oral communications before …

Social media monitoring: aims, methods, and challenges for international companies

2014

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to clarify the aims, monitoring methods and challenges of social media monitoring from the perspective of international companies. Trends in the literature are also investigated. Design/methodology/approach – Based on a systematic literature review, 30 key articles from 2008 to 2012 were further analysed. Findings – International companies need real-time monitoring software, expertise and dynamic visualization to facilitate early detection and prognoses supporting strategy making. This is a costly affair, prompting questions about return on investment. A recent trend in the research literature concerns the development of models describing how issues s…
