Indoor air problems and the perceived social climate in schools: A multilevel structural equation analysis
2018
Indoor air problems in schools appear to influence learning outcomes and absence rates. However, previous research has not investigated whether indoor air problems influence the social climate of schools. Therefore, we studied whether indoor air problems observed in schools associate with students' perceptions of the teacher-student relationship and class spirit. The nationwide sample of Finnish schools (N = 194 schools/27153 students) was analyzed using multilevel structural equation modeling. Data on the schools' social climate collected from students were merged with independently collected data on observed indoor air problems from school principals. We found that the teacher-student rel…
An Experimental Investigation on the Air Permeability of Passive Ventilation Grilles
2015
Abstract The need of increasing both energy saving and acoustic insulation has leaded to the design of lowest air permeability frames resulting in the worsening of indoor air quality. Moreover, sometime in several civil-use existing buildings (i.e. schools or houses, historical buildings) mechanical ventilation systems cannot be installed due to non-removable constraints. In these cases, passive ventilation grilles are a cheap and effective solution for the ventilation. This work deals with an in-depth experimental analysis about the air permeability values measured over a set of passive ventilation grilles available on the market. Obtained results often showed performances very far to thos…
Visually low-impacting methods for the measurement of parameters related to IAQ risk indicators in exhibition halls
2021
Microclimate for cultural heritage plays a fundamental role in the degradation process of artefacts exhibited in museums. Generally, the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring inside museums is based on conventional measurements of thermo-hygrometry parameters and longtime averaged measurements of atmospheric pollutants’ concentration. Unfortunately, all these approaches require electric supply and are usually characterized by a noticeable visual impact on the exhibition space, which clearly negatively affects the visitors’ experience. This paper intends to revisit and discuss a methodology (and its test application on field, to estimate the risk of damage of three artefacts displayed in an ol…
Relationship between domestic smoking and metals and rare earth elements concentration in indoor PM2.5
2018
Cigarette smoke is the main source of indoor chemical and toxic elements. Cadmium (Cd), Thallium (Tl), Lead (Pb) and Antimony (Sb) are important contributors to smoke-related health risks. Data on the association between Rare Earth Elements (REE) Cerium (Ce) and Lanthanum (La) and domestic smoking are scanty. To evaluate the relationship between cigarette smoke, indoor levels of PM2.5 and heavy metals, 73 children were investigated by parental questionnaire and skin prick tests. The houses of residence of 41 "cases" and 32 "controls" (children with and without respiratory symptoms, respectively) were evaluated by 48-hours PM2.5 indoor/outdoor monitoring. PM2.5 mass concentration was determi…

Moderate-to-Strong Turbulence Generation in a Laboratory Indoor Free Space Optics Link and Error Mitigation via RaptorQ Codes
2016
Free Space Optics (FSO) is rapidly gaining interest as a line-of sight communication technology that offers capabilities similar - in terms of bandwidth and transfer rates - to optical fibre, also possessing several advantages compared with traditional radio frequency links. However, FSO link quality can be strongly affected by unfavourable weather conditions and also by the phenomenon of optical turbulence, even in clear sky. In this work, we have implemented an indoor FSO link and generated moderate-to-strong turbulence conditions along the optical path by using heaters and a mechanical ventilation system. In this way, we have been able to investigate the effects of the generated turbulen…
Integration of WiFi ToF Positioning System in the Open, Flexible and Adaptive WiSHFUL Architecture
2017
We integrate a prototypeWiFi Time-of-Flight (ToF) ranging and positioning system in the WiSHFUL software platforms and hardware radios for experimental prototyping. Users have access to ToF measurements as well as computed positions through unified programming interfaces that make possible to investigate innovative positioning and networking solutions. TRUE pub
Indoor air pollutants stimulate interleukin-8-specific mRNA expression and protein secretion of alveolar macrophages.
1998
Indoor air pollutants may cause inflammatory changes of the airways and adjacent pulmonary tissue. After phagocytosis of inhaled particles alveolar macrophages (AM) release chemotactic mediators capable of attracting inflammatory cells into the lung tissue. To evaluate these mechanisms further peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC) and human AM (freshly recovered from the lower respiratory tract) were exposed to the indoor particles Soot FR 101 and Printex 90, the asbestos fiber Chrysotile B, and titanium dioxide (TiO2) at concentrations of 10 or 50 microg/10(6) cells for up to 8 h. The migration of granulocytes into the conditioned supernatants of AM and PBMNC was quantified by chemota…
Third-hand smoke exposure and health hazards in children
2013
Smoking still represents a huge public health problem. Millions of children suffer the detrimental effects of passive smoking. An increasing number of countries have recently issued laws to regulate smoking in public places. Instead, homes remain a site where children are dangerously exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). The combination of tobacco smoke pollutants which remain in an indoor environment, the so-called ‘third-hand smoke’ (THS), represent a new concept in the field of tobacco control. THS consists of pollutants that remain on surfaces and in dust after tobacco has been smoked, are re-emitted into the gas-phase, or react with other compounds in the environment to form se…
INQUINAMENTO INDOOR DA RADON. UNA APPLICAZIONE DELLE RETI BAYESIANE A SUPPORTO DELLA DIAGNOSI
2010
