Effects of new logistics services on restaurants' business model and strategy

2016

The restaurant industry is present in every part of the world and has been a subject of significant interest for academic scholars. Despite being a more stable industry, technological innovations have started to reach restaurants as well. The purpose of this research is to study and analyze one of these innovations introduced to the full-service restaurant industry. Traditional delivery services in the restaurant industry have been acting as agents between restaurants and customers with the restaurants being in charge of the delivery. However, the food logistics service providers examined in this study offer their restaurant partners‟ new services such as control of the delivery process and…

Discharge management in fresh and brackish water RAS: Combined phosphorus removal by organic flocculants and nitrogen removal in woodchip reactors

2020

The current study combined P and N removal using organic flocculant chemicals and woodchip bioreactors in both freshwater and brackish water (7 ppm) recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The use of carbon (C) containing flocculant chemicals in the process was hypothesized to further stimulate C-demanding N removal (denitrification) in bioreactors. The trial of combined P and N removal consisted of four treatments: freshwater and brackish water RAS with and without the addition of supernatant from flocculation process to the woodchip reactor. Duplicate woodchip reactors were used per treatment and the trial was run for six weeks. 56 % and 49 % of P was removed from fresh and brackish slud…

The Effect of Mechanocatalytic Pretreatment on the Structure and Depolymerization of Willow

2020

In this study, the effect of a mechanocatalytic pretreatment on the structure of willow and sugar release from pretreated willow was explored. In the mechanocatalytic approach, the pretreatment consists of solvent-free impregnation with sulfuric acid and a mechanical treatment with ball milling. Willow sawdust and pretreated samples were analyzed with field emission scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The products in the sugar solution were determined as the total reducing sugars with the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid method and monosaccharides with capillary electrophoresis. According to the results, milling increased the sugar production, depending on the sulfuric acid load. T…

Shippers vs. freight forwarders: Do they differ in their port choice decisions? Evidence from the Spanish ceramic tile industry

2022

The present research aims to compare shippers’ and freight forwarders' port choice criteria in order to identify the main differences between these two decision-makers. Specifically, the research focuses on the port choice of the shippers belonging to the Spanish ceramic tile industry and the freight forwarders who manage their shipments. To do so, a mixed logit model is used with data obtained through a stated preference experiment. According to our results, shippers and freight forwarders differ only in the valuation of the cost attribute, with the latter being more cost-sensitive. Moreover, results indicate that freight forwarders are more conservative in their port choice decisions, as …

Kilpailutus ja osallisuuden rakenteelliset ehdot siivoojien arjen työelämässä

2019

Artikkelissa analysoidaan osallisuuden rakenteellisia taloudellisia ehtoja ja esteitä työelämässä. Kiinnostuksemme kohdistuu erityisesti siihen, miten palveluiden kilpailutus ja ulkoistaminen kiristävät työolosuhteita ja rajoittavat osallisuuden mahdollisuuksia. Tarkastelemme siivoojan työtä, jossa kilpailuttamisen mekanismit näkyvät selvästi. Artikkelin keskeinen havainto on, että työn taloudellinen organisointimuoto ehdollistaa voimakkaasti osallisuutta tukevia tai heikentäviä käytäntöjä, joita on usein pidetty työpaikkakohtaisesta harkinnasta riippuvaisina. Artikkeli pohjautuu aineistolähtöiseen laadulliseen tutkimukseen, jonka aineisto koostuu alun perin taiteell…

A fluorescence study of the loading and time stability of doxorubicin in sodium cholate/PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer mixed micelles

2019

Abstract Hypothesis Doxorubicin hydrochloride (DX) is one of the most powerful anticancer agents though its clinical use is impaired by severe undesired side effects. DX encapsulation in nanocarrier systems has been introduced as a mean to reduce its toxicity. Micelles of the nonionic triblock copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) (PEO-PPO-PEO), are very promising carrier systems. The positive charge of DX confines the drug to the hydrophilic corona region of the micelles. The use of mixed micelles of PEO-PPO-PEO copolymers and a negatively charged bile salt should favour the solubilization of DX in the apolar core region of the micelles. Experiments We st…

Stakeholder involvement in developing LNG as a ship fuel in the Baltic Sea region

2015

New environmental regulations require the shipping industry to reduce its sulphur emissions. The currently most environmentally friendly alternative for ship owners to comply with the regulations is the switch to LNG fuelled vessels which however also requires port developers to invest in the supply of LNG. In order to successfully implement the creation of an LNG infrastructure, various challenges have to be overcome. This study looks at the challenges of LNG as a ship fuel from a stakeholder perspective by conducting a port screening with the aim to assess the current development status of LNG projects and the drivers and impediments behind it. Furthermore, a qualitative research with exp…

Effects of integrating a bioethanol production process to a kraft pulp mill

2010

Abstract The integration of an ethanol production process based on prehydrolysis of softwood chips to a kraft pulp mill is discussed. A simulation model of this biorefinery has been created with WinGEMS simulation software to calculate the mass and energy balances of the biorefinery and to examine the effects of the integration on the operation of the pulp mill. Integrating the prehydrolysis process to the modeled pulp mill producing 1000 Adt/day of pine pulp would increase the wood consumption by 16%. With the increased wood consumption, 40 t/day of ethanol could be produced, and the excess power production could be increased by 460 MWh/day. The integration of the ethanol production proces…

Effect of indirect composite treatment microtensile bond strength of self-adhesive resin cements

2016

Background: No specific indications about the pre-treatment of indirect composite restorations is provided by the manufacturers of most self-adhesive resin cements. The potential effect of silane treatment to the bond strength of the complete tooth/indirect restoration complex is not available. The aim of this study was to determine the contribution of different surface treatments on microtensile bond strength of composite overlays to dentin using several self-adhesive resin cements and a total-etch one. Material and Methods: Composite overlays were fabricated and bonding surfaces were airborne-particle abraded and randomly assigned to two different surface treatments: no treatment or silane…
