Characterization of automotive shredder residues before and five years after landfill disposal

The paper illustrates the results of an extensive analytical characterization study of automotive shredder residues (ASR), also known as "fluff". The analyses concerned material fractions and their content, with special reference to heavy metals (e.g. Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Cu) and arsenic. Elution tests on the original materials were also conducted. Moreover, chemical concentrations of ASR samples after about five years' landfill residence was assessed, in order to verify possible changes resulting from both in-situ leaching and organic matter degradation phenomena. Evaluation of yeasts from Ecuadorian chicha by their performance as starters for alcoholic fermentations in the food industry

Yeasts involved in the spontaneous fermentation of traditional beverages like chicha (indigenous Andean beer) may have the potential to be used as starter cultures to improve the quality and microbiological safety of these products, but also as non-conventional alternatives to other food alcoholic fermentations. In this research, we isolated, identified and characterised yeast strains from four Ecuadorian chichas made by using four different raw materials: rice (RC), oat (OC), grape (GC) and a mixture of seven corn varieties (yamor, YC). Aviation Crew Recovery Experiences on Outstations

Abstract ACMI flight crews spend considerable time away from home on outstations. This study suggests that this long term stay carries its own considerations in regards to rest recovery with practical implications for Fatigue Risk Management as prescribed by ICAO. Four recovery experiences, Work Detachment, Control, Relaxation and Mastery, are identified and correlated with 28 crew behaviours on base. The results indicate improvement considerations for airline management organizing a long term contract with ACMI crews, in particular to increase schedule stability to improve the crew member’s sense of Control.

Description of kraft cooking and oxygen–alkali delignification of bamboo by pulp and dissolving material analysis

Abstract The oxygen delignification of two bamboo ( Bambusa procera ) kraft pulps with kappa numbers of 13.6 and 20.0 were studied under typical conditions. Based on detailed analysis data on both the kraft and oxygen-delignified pulps and the corresponding spent liquors (black liquors and oxygen stage effluents), three yield and four selectivity estimation methods, utilizing component material balances, were tested resulting in the value ranges 96.2–97.9% and 43.5–60.4%, respectively, for oxygen delignification process studied. The British paper trade history was defined since the mid-1850s by a quest for a new raw material to replace rags. The requirements of the paper trade were first met by a discovery that esparto grass from Spain, and later from North Africa, could be utilised in British mills. Beginning in the late 1870s, the success of using esparto encouraged mill developments in British India. Delignification of bamboo (Bambusa procera acher)

Abstract Delignification of bamboo ( Bambusa procera acher ) was carried out by conventional kraft and soda pulping under varying conditions to determine the relationships between selected cooking parameters (EA 14–20%, sulfidity 0–45%, maximum temperature 165 and 170 °C, and time at maximum temperature 30–95 min) and pulp properties (kappa number, viscosity, and yield). Results indicated that in order to obtain relatively low kappa numbers (17–24), high sulfidity (35–45%) at lower EA (14–16%) increased both pulp viscosity and yield compared to the case of low sulfidity (0–15%) at higher EA (16–18%).
