The White Woman’s Haunted Body in Doris Lessing’s The Grass Is Singing

Underpinned by an interpretative grid where the analytic categories of gender and race are interwoven, the paper contends that Doris Lessing’s first novel, The Grass Is Singing (1950), unveils and dismantles culturally-constructed inscriptions of the white female body as elaborated within the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century British colonial discourses and largely reproduced at folk level. These manifestations of World englishes reflect a wide range of lexical, syntactical, phonetic, pragmatic, interpersonal and cultural features. This paper argues that an interpreter or language mediator trained in standard English may not necessarily be able to comprehend or make him/herself understood adequately in other varieties of English. ELF and mixed linguistic varieties in the Sicilian Context of Immigration

This study emerges from recent research within the context of a new Sicily, where the various ethnic groups living there have become ELF users, who appropriate the English language according to their own different native linguabackground. This phenomenon places Sicily in a complex position with regard to the creation of ElL speakers. Specific case-studies will support this paper in testifying to the growth of an ELF mode as a relexfied, hybridised and cannibalised language, which is adapted to the immigrants' linguistic necessities.

Studies on repetition in ELF interactions have been carried out in several domains, but medical academic discourse still remains under-researched. This paper explores same-speaker repetition in a 31,153-word corpus of lectures included in the 100,135-word medical section of the 1 million-word ELFA (English as a Lingua Franca in Academic Settings) corpus. English does not have a grammatical gender, thus having an “intrinsic predisposition towards gender-neutral forms” (Poddighe 2020, 3). Most personal nouns do not indicate a specific gender, as in the case of person or engineer. However, there are also personal nouns with lexical gender, such as king or queen (Hellinger 2001).
