A firm’s organizational innovation and organizational learning abilities

2019

Many recent studies are dedicated to the problem of innovation as a mean of improving a firm’s overall performance. Various kinds of innovation in a firm usually are closely interrelated with each other. While the majority of studies focus on technological - product and process - innovation, the investigation of non-technological - marketing and organizational - innovation (ORI), has increasingly attracted the interest of researchers during the last decade. Organizational culture and organizational learning are important drivers of such innovation. For instance, a collaborative culture, trust and open-mindedness encourage new initiatives and ideas, while learning helps not just to improve s…

Organizational innovation for SME'S: a model for Latvia

2020

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can be a significant source of innovation in small economies. SMEs face challenges of limited capacity, personnel and resources for long-term investments. Additionally, they might not see and understand the benefits of innovation. Implementation of organizational innovation (OI) could give such enterprises an opportunity to improve competitiveness and develop other types of innovation. The purpose of this study is to develop a model, explaining OI through such factors as organizational culture (OC) and knowledge management (KM) in SMEs via an empirical study across various industries. Surveying 600 SMEs in Latvia, the authors explore the contributio…

Examining Open Innovation in Science (OIS): what Open Innovation can and cannot offer the science of science

2021

Scholars across disciplines increasingly hear calls for more open andcollaborative approaches to scientific research. The concept of OpenInnovation in Science (OIS) provides a framework that integratesdispersed research efforts aiming to understand the antecedents, contingencies, and consequences of applying open and collaborativeresearch practices. While the OIS framework has already been taken upby science of science scholars, its conceptual underpinnings requirefurther specification. In this essay, we critically examine the OIS conceptand bring to light two key aspects: 1) how OIS builds upon OpenInnovation (OI) research by adopting its attention to boundary-crossingknowledge flows and by…

The analysis of teaching practices at school and at university.

2011

It is well-known that teachers are required to have an experimental mentality leading them to constantly verify the educational efficiency of their teaching actions and make new hypotheses to improve. Actually, what really happens at school is that intuition is predominant because of the lack of time, so these hypotheses are quite dim, working procedures are the fruit of almost indefinite improvisation, and assessment does not fit the need for observing the benefits and results of learning or it is not even carried out at all. Therefore, it is required for school teachers to have a strong methodological competence in the field of teaching research. The Research Group at the University of Pa…

Common Stocks. Urban peripheries, social innovation and urban regeneration

2020

The peripheries have been considered over the years as a crucial policy challenge that has oriented policies and strategies at different levels of government. On the other hand, measures that stimulate local contexts to develop specific policies have assumed an extremely episodic and unpredictable character in which the public debate on urban regeneration has remained largely dominated by that of extraordinary and emergency intervention on the peripheries. The paper analyses the case study of transformation of the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa in Palermo with the new Cre.Zi Plus platform transforming a neglected and abandoned building in a peripheral area by delivering services to the commun…

Promotions and Earnings – Gender or Merit? Evidence from Longitudinal Personnel Data

2017

This study examines the determinants of promotions, performance evaluations and earnings using unique longitudinal data from the personnel records of a large university. The study focuses on the role of gender in remuneration using, first, information on the complexity ratings of job tasks to define promotions on job ladders and, second, information on objective individual productivity. The study finds that individual research productivity was an important determinant of promotions and earnings. The results indicate that gender has no effect on the probability of being promoted, conditional on productivity, nor does it play a role in the performance evaluation of employees. Furthermore, the…

Design For Territorial Innovation. Participatory design process and good practices for socio-cultural sustainability

2022

This article studies at length the role of design within territorial socio-cultural transformation. It investigates and describes the industriousness of projects/processes which are particularly effective for social and territorial innovation and are applied above all, to fragile and problematic urban contexts. It focuses on communities and its inhabitants who are often excluded from traditional narrative through some particularly significant projects, with an emphasis on concrete experiences of recent projects in southern Italy. Thus, the article, traverses topics and critical points of a more extensive and profound disciplinary refection, it explores innovative roles of design in the soci…

Need for speed? Exploring the relative importance of patents and utility models among German firms

2017

Despite the wide use of two-tiered patent systems (patents and utility models (UMs)), there is little empirical evidence about how often UMs are actually used, what kind of firms use them to protect their intellectual property, and how firms rank them relative to patents. We offer such an analysis using data from Germany. We find that larger firms are more likely to use both protection methods. Moreover, a short life cycle of products and services is associated with an increased likelihood to use UMs. The features and functioning of the German UM system are of broader interest because it has been a benchmark for several second tier patent protection systems around the world. peerReviewed

Uncovering value through exploration of barriers:A perspective on intellectual property rights in a national innovation system

2023

Although for a long time policy has emphasized the role of intellectual property rights as a growth agent facilitating innovation, the literature has called into question this relationship. Critical studies have focused on studying policy frames and protection modes that could transform the intellectual property rights system to be more beneficial. Studies have not, however, focused on the intellectual property rights system stakeholders in cocreating the system. Our study contributes to the literature by uncovering the tensions in developing a national-level intellectual property rights strategy. Using the Delphi method, we draw from a broad stakeholder dialogue to show the barriers for in…
