To cope with the enhanced luminosity of the beam delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2020, the “A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS” (ATLAS) experiment has planned a major upgrade. As part of this, the trigger at Level1 based on calorimeter data will be upgraded to exploit fine-granularity readout using a new system of Feature Extractors, which each use different physics objects for the trigger selection. The article focusses on the jet Feature EXtractor (jFEX) prototype, one of the three types of Feature Extractors. Development of an optical link card for the upgrade phase II of TileCal experiment

This work presents the design of an optical link card developed in the frame of the R&D activities for the phase 2 upgrade of the TileCal experiment as part of the evaluation of different technologies for the final choice in the next two years. The board is designed as a mezzanine which can work independently or plugged in the Optical Multiplexer Board of the TileCal backend electronics. It includes two SNAP 12 optical connectors able to transmit and receive up to 75 Gbps and one SFP optical connector for lower speeds and compatibility with existing hardware as the Read Out Driver. The Loss of Structural Integrity in Damaged Spruce Needles from Locations Exposed to Air Pollution I. Mesophyll and Central Cylinder

In connection with the new type of forest damage, the individual disease situation of two-year-old spruce (Picea abies) needles was analyzed histopathologically in forest areas exposed to different levels of O3-, SO2- and NO3- pollution. Early damage results from losses of chlorophyll in the mesophyll cells. The bleaching is more intensive towards the apex in severely damaged needles. The cytoplasm is aggregated at the cell wall and the chloroplasts show definite structural damage as well. The mesophyll cells below the epidermis, or the cells adjacent to the vascular bundle sheath, appear to be particularly susceptible. Refitting of an eco-friendly sailing yacht: numerical prediction and experimental validation

A 4.60 m sailing yacht, made with a flax fiber composite and wood, has been refitted with the aim of hull weight reduction and performance improvement during regattas. The first objective was obtained with a lightening of internal hull reinforcements while the second one with a reduction of the maximum beam, in order to minimize the longitudinal moment of inertia. The refitting was first simulated via CAD-FEM interaction to establish the feasibility of the procedure and to verify the structural integrity. H-KPP : Hypervisor-Assisted Kernel Patch Protection

We present H-KPP, hypervisor-based protection for kernel code and data structures. H-KPP prevents the execution of unauthorized code in kernel mode. In addition, H-KPP protects certain object fields from malicious modifications. H-KPP can protect modern kernels equipped with BPF facilities and loadable kernel modules. H-KPP does not require modifying or recompiling the kernel. Unlike many other systems, H-KPP is based on a thin hypervisor and includes a novel SLAT switching mechanism, which allows H-KPP to achieve very low (≈6%) performance overhead compared to baseline Linux.

AbstractThe accumulation of mutations is frequently associated with alterations in gene function leading to the onset of diseases, including cancer. Aiming to find novel genes that contribute to the stability of the genome, we screened the Saccharomyces cerevisiae deletion collection for increased mutator phenotypes. Among the identified genes, we discovered MET7, which encodes folylpolyglutamate synthetase (FPGS), an enzyme that facilitates several folate-dependent reactions including the synthesis of purines, thymidylate (dTMP) and DNA methylation. Modulation of base excision repair of 8-oxoguanine by the nucleotide sequence.

8-Oxoguanine (8-oxoG) is a major product of oxidative DNA damage, which induces replication errors and interferes with transcription. By varying the position of single 8-oxoG in a functional gene and manipulating the nucleotide sequence surrounding the lesion, we found that the degree of transcriptional inhibition is independent of the distance from the transcription start or the localization within the transcribed or the non-transcribed DNA strand.
