Exploring early adolescents’ stressful IT use experiences

Early adolescents are accustomed to using information technology (IT) for different purposes as a part of their everyday life. While IT use can provide many benefits, it can also include negative experiences, such as feelings of stress (i.e. technostress). Considering that young IT users’ technostress perspectives have remained limited in the literature, this paper attempts to contrast their experiences with aspects from earlier research. This data was collected during an short-term incubation experiment in March 2017 that investigated the response of a surface plankton community to upwelling. This experiment was carried in the framework of the SFB754-funded KOSMOS mesocosm study that took place in La Punta, Callao, Peru between February-April 2017. A total of six different treatments were used to disentangle chemical and biological characteristics of deep water that influence surface plankton blooms: 2 different deep water sources with different nutrient concentrations; 3 treatments to distinguish the effects of inorganic nutrients, organic nutrients and deep water microbial populations. Proteins in Ionic Liquids: Reactions, Applications, and Futures

Biopolymer processing and handling is greatly facilitated by the use of ionic liquids, given the increased solubility, and in some cases, structural stability imparted to these molecules. Focussing on proteins, we highlight here not just the key drivers behind protein-ionic liquid interactions that facilitate these functionalities, but address relevant current and potential applications of protein-ionic liquid interactions, including areas of future interest.

The effect of writing modality on recollection in children and adolescents

We set out to assess the extent to which writing modality affects recollection in children and adolescents. We examined 10- to 11-year-old children’s (N = 63) and 16-year-old adolescents’ (N = 43) handwriting, keyboarding with a laptop computer and keyboarding with a touchscreen tablet computer or mobile phone in a within-subjects experimental design. Participants were instructed to write down stories dictated to them in the three writing modalities. Recollection of the stories was assessed using free recall of details in the stories. Measuring, comparing and interpreting phenotypic selection on floral scent

Natural selection on floral scent composition is a key element of the hypothesis that pollinators and other floral visitors drive scent evolution. The measure of such selection is complicated by the high-dimensional nature of floral scent data and uncertainty about the cognitive processes involved in scent-mediated communication. We use dimension reduction through reduced-rank regression to jointly estimate a scent composite trait under selection and the strength of selection acting on this trait. Drawing on recordings of remote screen-based work meetings in Finland, this conversation analytic study investigates interactive properties of mouse cursor movements in technology-mediated shared tasks. The article illustrates how participants rely on features afforded by the input device in ways that divert from its pre-designed functions to accomplish virtual pointing gestures. Structure-based evaluation of the resonance interactions and effectiveness of the charge transfer in nitroamines

Structural data for five nitroamines of general formula Me₂N–G–NO₂ show effectiveness of the ground-state charge transfer to be most and least efficient in N,N-dimethylnitramine and in 4-N,N-dimethylamino-β-nitrostyrene, respectively. Electron-donor power of the amino nitrogen atom in the latter compound is less than that in 4-nitro-β-N,N-dimethylaminostyrene (these two compounds are isomers). Natural population analysis shows that the charge transfer from the amino to the nitro oxygen atoms is most effective in N,N-dimethylnitramine, Me₂N–NO₂. The Effect of Halogen Bonding on the Packing of Bromine Substituted Pyridine and Benzyl Functionalized Resorcinarene Tetrapodands in the Solid State

The synthesis and characterization of new bromine-substituted pyridine and benzyl functionalized tetramethoxy resorcinarene tetrapodands are described and their solid-state structural properties and interactions were studied by single crystal X-ray crystallography. Three different crystal structures were obtained for the pyridine derivative and one for the benzyl derivative, which revealed that the interactions of the bromine substituent have an explicit effect on the crystal packing of the resorcinarene molecules.
