Auditorijas uzticēšanās portālā "Skaties.lv" publicētajam saturam un to ietekmējošie faktori
2020
Manipulating Self-Avatar Body Dimensions in Virtual Worlds to Complement an Internet-Delivered Intervention to Increase Physical Activity in Overweig…
2020
Virtual reality has been found to be a useful tool for positively influencing relevant psychological variables in order to increase physical activity (PA), especially in the overweight population. This study investigates the use of avatars and their physical variations to extend the effectiveness of existing interventions to promote PA. The main objective is to analyze the influence of the avatars&rsquo
Construction of Disjoint Virtual Backbones for Wireless Sensor Networks
2020
A wireless sensor network is a wireless network of sensors aimed at monitoring physical events. It has ingratiated itself into almost all areas of human endeavors. Data dissemination in these networks is quite challenging and is generally accomplished by flooding. But flooding introduces broadcast storm problem due from implosion and overlap. To overcome this, topology management can prescribe a virtual backbone network to which routing is confined. In this paper we propose an algorithm that constructs multiple disjoint virtual backbone networks, using only nodes' locations. The disjointedness makes routing more robust and the network exploitation energy efficient. Simulations show our algo…
Communication structure and collective actions in social media
2010
In this paper I present results a study of different types of social media communication and networking channels that allow for collective action (CA): Twitter, Jaiku / Qaiku, Ning and Facebook. My preliminary findings indicate, that the visual outlining and the structure of communication create different kinds of collectivity and collective actions. A status stream is effective for simple and fast repetitive mass actions and for individual mass broadcasting, while channels and threads are needed as a backchannel for more complicated, coordinated and iterative tasks and support a sense of community. When planning collective action on the Internet, ranging from citizen participation to marke…
The Dignity in Free Speech: Civility Norms in Post-Terror Societies
2016
ABSTRACTIt is difficult to strike a balance between protecting freedom of speech and ensuring public safety. The attacks on 22 July 2011 in Norway, and the fear of terrorist acts inspired by public utterances on the Internet, have caused many to question whether and how we should regulate hate speech. In this article, we analyse the main arguments from the debate on freedom of speech in post-terror Norway, termed the ‘liberal’ and ‘harm’ (or ‘balance of harms’) arguments respectively. We propose a set of civility norms that may serve to uphold the wide freedom of speech advocated by the liberal argument, while being attentive to the real ethical challenges emphasised by the harm argument.
A method for modeling the battery state of charge in wireless sensor networks
2015
In this paper we propose a method for obtaining an analytic model of the battery State-of-Charge (SoC) in wireless sensor nodes. The objective is to find simple models that can be used to estimate accurately the real battery state and consequently the node lifetime. Running the model in the network nodes, we can provide the motes with the required information to implement applications that can be considered as battery-aware. The proposed methodology reduces the computational complexity of the model avoiding complicated electrochemical simulations and treating the battery as an unknown system with an output that can be predicted using simple mathematical models. At a first stage, during a se…
Robust Transmit Beamforming for Underlay D2D Communications on Multiple Channels
2020
Underlay device-to-device (D2D) communications lead to improvement in spectral efficiency by simultaneously allowing direct communication between the users and the existing cellular transmission. However, most works in resource allocation for D2D communication have considered single antenna transmission and with a focus on perfect channel state information (CSI). This work formulates a robust transmit beamforming design problem for maximizing the aggregate rate of all D2D pairs and cellular users (CUs). Assuming complex Gaussian distributed CSI error, our formulation guarantees probabilistically a signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) above a specified threshold. In addition, we al…
Reliable Underlay D2D Communications over Multiple Transmit Antenna Framework
2020
Robust beamforming is an efficient technique to guarantee the desired receiver performance in the presence of erroneous channel state information (CSI). However, the application of robust beamforming in underlay device-to-device (D2D) communication still requires further investigation. In this paper, we investigate resource allocation problem for underlay D2D communications by considering multiple antennas at the base station (BS) and at the transmitters of D2D pairs. The proposed design problem aims at maximizing the aggregate rate of all D2D pairs and cellular users (CUs) in downlink spectrum. In addition, our objective is augmented to achieve a fair allocation of resources across the D2D…
Relay selection in FDD amplify-and-forward cooperative networks
2017
In this paper, the problems of relay selection and distributed beamforming are investigated for bi-directional dual-hop amplify-and-forward frequency-division duplex cooperative wireless networks. When using individual per-relay maximum transmission power constraint, it has been proven that the relay selection and beamforming optimization problem becomes NP hard and requires exhaustive search to find the optimal solution. Therefore, we propose a computationally affordable sub-optimal multiple relay selection and beamforming optimization scheme based on the l1 norm squared relaxation. The proposed scheme performs the selection for the two transmission directions, simultaneously, while aiming…
Clustering-Assisted 3D Beamforming for Throughput Maximization in mmWave Networks
2021
Beamforming schemes have been widely used to improve network throughput in 5G mmWave networks. However, 3D beamforming schemes have hereto not been investigated in this context. In this work, a cluster-assisted 3D beamforming scheme is proposed to optimize the downtilt angle for network coverage and throughput maximization. User Equipment (UEs) are clustered based on inter-user and the inter-cluster distances. The interference is accounted from the adjacent clusters and thus frequency resources can be assigned to the non-adjacent clusters. Optimal downtilt angles are obtained for every cluster to maximize the throughput while considering the interference from adjacent clusters. 3D beam patt…
