Adoption of Constrained Application Protocol
2016
Among billions of Internet enabled devices that are expected to surround us in the near future, many will be resource constrained, i.e., will have limited power supply, processing power and memory. To cope with these limitations, the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) has been recently introduced as a lightweight alternative to HTTP for connecting the resource limited devices to the Web. Although the new protocol offers solid technical advantages, it remains uncertain whether a successful uptake will follow, as it depends also on its economic feasibility for the involved stakeholders. Therefore, this paper studies the techno-economic feasibility of CoAP using a systematic methodologica…
Research opportunities in performance measurement in public utilities regulation
2015
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a method to choose a set of scientific articles about performance measurement in public utilities regulation. The method is designed to identify references with high academic relevance in databases accessed via the internet, and, through these articles, to perform a mapping of these publications and conduct a systemic analysis. Design/methodology/approach – The study is characterized as exploratory and descriptive with a qualitative and quantitative approach. Incorporates an inductive logic, and draws on primary and secondary data sources. The research involves the application of a technical procedure for selection and study of selected art…
A continuous-space analytical approach for relay node placement in hybrid cellular and ad hoc networks
2009
A hybrid network is composed of a cellular component and an ad hoc component connected by a relay node, for the purpose of coverage extension and/or capacity improvement. In this paper, we analyze the capacity of such a hybrid network by employing a continuous-space analytical methodology based on circular geometry for uniformly distributed nodes. To achieve maximal overall capacity, the relay node needs to be placed in an optimum location between the base station and the mobile station located at the boundary of the hybrid network. Numerical results show that for obtaining the optimum overall capacity for the hybrid network, the placement of the relay node should be in a range which is nei…
An Integrated Wireless Communication Architecture for Maritime Sector
2011
Published version of a chapter in the book: Multiple Access Communications. Also available from the publisher at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-23795-9_17 The rapid evolution of terrestrial wireless systems has brought mobile users more and more desired communication services. Maritime customers are asking for the same, such as the concepts of “Broadband at Sea” and “Maritime Internet”. Quite a lot of research work has focused on the development of new and better maritime communication technologies, but less attention has been paid on interworking of multiple maritime wireless networks or on satisfying service provisioning. To address this, an integrated wireless Communication Architec…
Managing IFC for civil engineering projects
2003
The "Industrial Foundation Classes" (IFC) are an ISO norm to define all components of a building in a civil engineering project. IFC files are textual files whose size can reach 100 megabytes. Several IFC files can coexist on the same civil engineering project. Due to their size, their handling and sharing is a complex task. In this paper, we present an approach to automatically identify business objects in the IFC files and simplify their visualization and manipulation on the Internet. We construct an IFC Viewer which transforms the IFC file into a XML IFC tree manipulated through the 3D visualization of the building. The IFC Viewer composed a web-based platform called ACTIVe3D BUILD SERVE…
Cooperative compressive power spectrum estimation in wireless fading channels
2017
This paper considers multiple wireless sensors that cooperatively estimate the power spectrum of the signals received from several sources. We extend our previous work on cooperative compressive power spectrum estimation to accommodate the scenario where the statistics of the fading channels experienced by different sensors are different. The signals received from the sources are assumed to be time-domain wide-sense stationary processes. Multiple sensors are organized into several groups, where each group estimates a different subset of lags of the temporal correlation. A fusion centre (FC) combines these estimates to obtain the power spectrum. As each sensor group computes correlation esti…
Learning Research Methods and Processes via Sharing Experience in a BLOG
2006
The goal is to increase knowledge about different research methods that have been employed in the information technology field by supporting the information exchange, collaboration, and cooperation between researchers. Well-designed, well-told stories can help others learn from past situations to respond more effectively in future situation. A blog is presented where PhD students and researchers are invited to collaborate by providing their stories, reading and commenting existing stories. This infrastructure allows researchers and PhD students to write the contents posing questions and finding answers on the relationship between research process and research results.
MultiROMs and Online Applications Used for Teaching Phonetics in a Secondary School: A Critical Review
2012
The aim of the article is to evaluate the quality of the materials used to teach pronunciation in a Polish secondary school. Although the analysis covers all kinds of aids available for teachers, including a coursebook accompanied by a CD, the authors focus mainly on MultiROMs and online resources connected with a given book. The findings allow the authors to conclude which coursebook sets seem to be most effective in shaping students’ pronunciation and which exercises are most helpful, taking into consideration the level of students’ English. Additionally, the authors’ idea was to check whether these books take into consideration the aspects of pronunciation which prove to be especially di…
Evaluation of Ensemble Machine Learning Methods in Mobile Threat Detection
2017
The rapid growing trend of mobile devices continues to soar causing massive increase in cyber security threats. Most pervasive threats include ransom-ware, banking malware, premium SMS fraud. The solitary hackers use tailored techniques to avoid detection by the traditional antivirus. The emerging need is to detect these threats by any flow-based network solution. Therefore, we propose and evaluate a network based model which uses ensemble Machine Learning (ML) methods in order to identify the mobile threats, by analyzing the network flows of the malware communication. The ensemble ML methods not only protect over-fitting of the model but also cope with the issues related to the changing be…
Sixth graders’ evaluation strategies when reading Internet search results : an eye-tracking study
2018
Eye-tracking technology was used to examine Internet search result evaluation strategies adopted by sixth-grade students (N = 36) during ten experimental information search tasks. The relevancy of the search result’s title, URL, and snippet components was manipulated and selection of search results as well as looking into probabilities on the search result components was analysed. The results revealed that during first-pass inspection, students read the search engine page by first looking at the title of a search result. If the title was relevant, the probability of looking at the snippet of the search result increased. During second-pass inspection, there was a high probability of students…
