Supportive care services in hemato-oncology centers: a national survey

2016

Background: In the field of hemato-oncology, there is paucity of data assessing models of integration between hemato-oncology and other partner specialties. The aim of this national survey was to gather information about the status of the integration of this kind of activity in hemato-oncologic units existing in Italy. Methods: A national telephone survey was conducted to gather information about the status of the integration of hemato-oncologic and supportive care/anesthesiological services. From the national registry of hemato-oncology units, 149 centers were contacted by phone and a dedicated doctor was identified to gather information about the center through a telephone interview. The frequency of alcoholism in patients with advanced cancer admitted to an acute palliative care unit and a home care program

2015

Abstract Context Cancer patients with a history of alcoholism may be problematic. The frequency of alcoholism among patients with advanced cancer has never been reported in Italy or other European countries. Objectives The aim of this prospective study was to determine the frequency of alcoholism, assessed with a simple and validated instrument, among patients with advanced cancer who were referred to two different palliative care settings: an acute inpatient palliative care unit (PCU) of a comprehensive cancer center in a metropolitan area and a home care program (HCP) in a territorial district, localized in the mountains of Italy. Methods A consecutive sample of patients admitted to an in…

Challenge Accepted! a Critical Reflection on How to Perform a Health Survey Among University Students—An Example of the Healthy Campus Mainz Project

2021

Background: Universities represent an important setting of everyday life for health promotion. The Healthy Campus Mainz project aims to develop an evidence-based and comprehensive student health management program covering physical, mental, and social health promotion. Hence, an initial health survey was performed in order to identify the students' health concerns and resources. Up until now, it remains unclear which topics to choose in a health survey among university students and which strategies can be recommended to receive an acceptable response rate or representative student sample within a university setting. The present paper contributes to the call for the present research topic “P…

Selection bias during recruitment of elderly subjects from the general population for psychiatric interviews

1997

The aim of the present study was to determine and assess a possible selection bias in an epidemiologic investigation in the elderly. A stratified sample of 1305 probands aged 60-99 years was initially contacted by mail and then by telephone to obtain their consent to participate in a psychiatric interview. A liberal recruitment procedure led to interview participation of only 291 subjects. The proportion of younger, male, and married subjects participating in the study was greater than that of elderly, female, and single or widowed subjects. Subjects without a psychiatric lifetime diagnosis were more cooperative than those with a psychiatric disorder. The latter finding demonstrates the nee…

Masculinity and Privileges: Acknowledge as a Potencial Articulator of Change

2021

Imagining between ourselves: a group interview approach in exploring listening experiences

2014

In this paper listening experiences are explored through verbal interactions in a group interview situation. By focusing on (1) ordinary and (2) evocative modes of dealing with listening experiences, the present study investigated how imagination mediates between pre-reflective and reflective consciousness and how imagining is shared between persons. Analysis revealed that participants utilised both modes in their discussions for either music or everyday sound samples, although the ordinary mode was the dominant one. The evocative mode was utilised relatively more frequently with the music samples. Group dynamics had an effect on how the mental images and meanings were described and shared …
