Model calculations for wetting transitions in polymer mixtures

Partially compatible binary mixtures of linear flexible polymers are considered in the presence of a wall which preferentially adsorbs one component. Using a Flory-Huggins type mean field approach, it is shown that in typical cases at two-phase coexistence the wall is always « wet », i.e. coated with a macroscopically thick layer of the preferred phase, and the transition to the non wet state occurs at volume fractions of the order of 1/~N (where N is the chain length) at the coexistence curve. Abstract In this paper, time, potential and pH dependence of SO42− and HSO3− accumulations measured by an in-situ radiotracer method on surface oxide layers of low carbon steel are presented and discussed. This work is a continuation of a research program[1–5] and deals with the characterization of the sorption behaviour of low carbon steel in solutions containing sulfate and bisulfite ions (as a possible model of acid rain). The conventional heat transfer models are not sufficiently suitable for thermal characterization of bio-sourced thermal insulating materials due to their strongly hydrophilic nature. Transport coefficients of n-butane into and through the surface of silicalite-1 from non-equilibrium molecular dynamics study

We have studied coupled heat and mass transfer of n-butane through a membrane of silicalite-1. A description of the surface was given using non-equilibrium thermodynamics, and transport coefficients were determined. Three independent coefficients were found for the whole surface: the resistance to heat transfer, the coupling coefficient and the resistance to mass transfer. These coefficients were defined in stationary state. All resistances are significant, and show that the surface acts as a barrier to transport. This article discusses the effect of solute association on the apparent adsorption isotherm and on the chromatographic peak profile. The modelling performed has shown that dimerization of a solute in a chromatographic system gives rise to an apparent adsorption isotherm of the non-linear type. This results first of all in peak broadening. Tailing or a fronting can be observed depending on the relative retention of the monomer and the dimer. Secondly, the retention of the solute depends on the amount of sample because of the non-linear character of the adsorption isotherm. AbstractChromated copper arsenate (CCA) mixtures were used in the past for wood preservation, leading to large scale soil contamination. This study aimed at contributing to the risk assessment of CCA-contaminated soils by assessing the toxicity of binary mixtures of copper, chromium and arsenic to the earthworm Eisenia andrei in OECD artificial soil. An insoluble material of polysaccharidic nature has been obtained by thermal alkali treatment of the filamentous fungus Phomopsis sp. FT-IR spectrum of the resulting material as well as its nitrogen content suggest that chitosan and glucans are the main components of the biomaterial. Information on Lewis base sites has also been obtained and used as a guideline in the evaluation of the complexing ability against a number of metal ions in aqueous media at pH in the range 4--6. Results indicate that after 24h contact time, up to 870 micromol/g of lead, 390 micromol/g of copper, 230 micromol/g of cadmium, 150 micromol/g of zinc and 110 micromol/g of nickel ions are adsorbed into the material. …

Low-moisture biopolymer-based systems are commonly encountered in food. Obviously, understanding the physical basis of their quality: e.g texture, or performance over time or as a function of their composition is of primary importance. The objectives of this work were to evaluate how the presence of sucrose and water content affects physico-chemical properties. The physical stability of these materials were monitored through an insight at different molecular scales. Then the relations between the multi-scale studies were investigated.
