Dietary acrylamide and physical performance tests: A cross-sectional analysis

2021

Background Dietary acrylamide is found in certain foods, such as deep frying, baking and roasting, and is associated with higher inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters. The association between dietary acrylamide and physical performance has not yet been explored. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between dietary acrylamide intake and physical performance tests in a large cohort of North American individuals affected by knee osteoarthritis or at high risk for this condition. Methods Dietary acrylamide intake was obtained through a food frequency questionnaire and reported in quartiles and as an increase in deciles. Physical performance was explored using the 20-…

Dural sac localization using myelography and its application to the lumbosacral epidural in dogs

2020

Background: The techniques described for the identification of the lumbosacral (LS) epidural space in dogs do not guarantee the needle position or an accidental subarachnoid puncture, especially in small size dogs.Aim: To determine the relationship between body weight and the location of the dural sac (DS) using myelography in dogs, and to determine the possibility of subarachnoid puncture during LS epidural based on the position of the DS.Methods: Four masked observers evaluated 70 myelographic studies of dogs, annotating the vertebrae where the DS ended, if it was localized before or after the LS space, and if accidental subarachnoid puncture during LS epidural injection was possible (yes…

Impact of hip abductor and adductor strength on dynamic balance and ankle biomechanics in young elite female Basketball players

2022

This study aimed to evaluate, in an isolated and relative manner, hip abductor (ABD) and adductor (AD) strength and to study the extent to which these factors are related to balance and ankle dorsiflexion mobility in young elite female basketball players. Sixty trainee-level elite female basketball players (13–18 years old), who voluntarily agreed to participate in the study, were divided into three subgroups based on competition age divisions (U14, U16, U18). Isometric hip ABD and AD strength in each leg was evaluated using the ForceFrame Strength Testing System, also calculating the strength ratio and imbalance between legs. Y Balance Test (YBT) and ankle dorsiflexion mobility were also a…

Micro and macro mechanical characterization of friction stir welded Ti–6Al–4V lap joints through experiments and numerical simulation

2013

Abstract Lap joints of Ti–6Al–4V were produced and the effect of the main process parameters was studied through macro and micro investigations highlighting mechanical resistance, microhardness profiles, grain size and phase distributions. A dedicated numerical model was used to link the input process parameters to temperature and strain distributions and to the final microstructure in the welded joint. It is found that the strain produced in the stir zone by proper combination of process parameters plays a fundamental role in the final microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints.

Comparison between FSW and bonded lap joints - A preliminary investigation

2017

Difficult to weld aluminium alloys can be effectively joined by different alternative processes. Friction Stir Welding (FSW), among the solid-state processes and adhesive bonding represent two very attractive techniques. They allow the production of highly resistant joints avoiding the formation of the typical fusion weld defects. The aim of this work is to identify, analyse and compare the mechanical properties of AA6016 aluminium alloy joints made out of 1 mm thick sheets. FSW lap joints were and epoxy bonded joints were produced. Using the FSW results as benchmark, the overlap required in the bonded joint was identified to ensure the same static strength. Once the geometric configuration…

FSW of Lap and T-Joints

2010

Even if in the last years several researches have studied the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process, it should be observed that most of these studies are concerned with the butt joint and just a few of them extend to more complex geometries. It is worthy to notice that the acquired knowledge on FSW process of butt joints is not immediately extendable to lap and T-joints. The first observation is that in butt joints the surface to be welded is vertical, while in lap and T-joints it is horizontal and placed at the bottom of the top blank to be welded; in this way a major vertical component of the material flow is required to obtain sound joints. In the FSW of lap-joints four different geometric…

Minimum bond length and size effects in FRP-substrate bonded joints

2009

The load transfer mechanism between the fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials and the substrate plays a crucial role in the overall response of retrofitted structural members. The FRP–support material interface can be studied by using pull tests in which a reinforcement plate is bonded to a prism and subjected to a tensile force. The experimental results obtained regard the assembly (FRP strip-support block), then a central problem is how to carry out the interface constitutive laws and the related parameters. The principal objective of the present paper is to contrive a procedure which, for a fixed interface constitutive law, permits to derive the interface mechanical parameters from th…

Thermal imaging ruled out as a supplementary assessment in patients with fibromyalgia: A cross-sectional study

2021

Background The diagnosis of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) syndrome is often complicated and relies on diagnostic criteria based mostly on the symptoms reported by patients. Implementing objective complementary tests would be desirable to better characterize this population. Objective The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to compare the skin temperature at rest using thermography in women with FMS and healthy women. Methods Eighty-six women with FMS and 92 healthy controls volunteered to participate. The temperature of all participants was measured by infra-red thermography, registering the skin surface temperature (minimum, maximum and average) at rest in different areas: neck, upper…

Cranial deformations in an Iron Age population from Münsingen-Rain, Switzerland

2008

The aim of this paper is an examination of cranial fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and deformations in the prehistoric population of Munsingen-Rain (La Tene period, Switzerland). The material consists of 76 skulls. Three cases of craniosynostosis, one scaphocephalic skull with complete obliteration of the sagittal suture and two plagiocephalic skulls were identified. CT scans showed that premature closure of the frontosphenoidal suture caused these plagiocephalies. For three asymmetrically deformed skulls, differential diagnosis indicates torticollis (wry neck). Another four skulls exhibit strongly developed asymmetries of the cranium and mandible, but an aetiological diagnosis was not possible.…
