Multiskilled in many ways : Ghanaian Female Journalists Between Job and Home
2020
In Ghana, feminisation of journalism profession has become a fact: more girls are entering journalism programmes in the Universities, and the number of women employees are growing in the newsrooms. The problem of balancing worktime arrangements (e.g. irregular and unpredictable work schedules, weekend work and long working hours) with equally important domestic obligations are familiar to most female journalists around the globe. Even in countries with well-developed social support structures, and well-defined labour laws, the current nature of journalism worktime arrangements impedes many female journalists to achieve work–life balance. For most Ghanaian female journalists, the culturally …
The Supranational Dimension in Max Weber’s Vision of Politics
2019
Max Weber analyzed politics from the perspective of Chancen for actors, and he never separated world politics from domestic politics. The “Westphalian balance” between great European powers shaped Weber’s views on international polity. However, he also regarded Western individualism, human rights, and parliamentary democracy as necessary qualities to possess in order to be recognized as a great power. This vision provided the basis for his wartime critique of the expansionist tendencies in German foreign policy and for his demand for the parliamentarization of German politics. After the end of World War I, Weber used Woodrow Wilson’s idea of the League of Nations as the basis for a proposal…
Ajojahtia vai raportointia? : median valta Helsingin Sanomien teksteissä
2012
Tekstit on julkaistu 15.9–15.10.2009 välisenä aikana, jolloin vaalirahakohu vauhditti keskustelua median vallasta. Aineisto sisältää pääkirjoituksia, mielipidekirjoituksia, kolumneja, keskustelupalstan tekstejä, uutisia sekä reportaaseja. Tutkimus on laadullinen, ja tutkimusmetodina on käytetty kriittistä diskurssianalyysia. Analyysi pohjautuu osittain M.A.K. Hallidayn systeemis-funktionaaliseen kielioppiin. Teksteistä on analysoitu, miten median toimintaa kuvataan, millaisia nimityksiä mediasta käytetään ja miten poliitikkojen, median ja yleisön suhte…
Visibility without voice: Media witnessing irregular migrants in BBC online news journalism
2016
In the analysis of journalistic representation of irregular migration to Europe, rather little attention is given to the variation of modes and genres of journalism. Most studies focus on text in ‘old media’ and the news genre. This article analyses affordances of different modalities and genres of online journalism in framing irregular migrants. Media framing in BBC online news coverage of a mediatised conflict in Spain, defined as a ‘migration crisis’, is analysed with multimodal social semiotics. While mediation makes global audiences witness tragedies at Europe's borders and online journalism affords more voice and deliberation for migrant sources, the frames of threat and victim domina…
Students’ agency profiles in relation to student-perceived teaching practices in university courses
2020
This study addresses the gap in our understanding of the role of pedagogy in agency construction among higher education students. In the present study, profiles of students’ agency experiences were identified and analysed with respect to the students’ perceptions of teaching practices in their courses (i.e., student-centred learning activities, forms of instruction, and student-teacher roles). The Agency of University Students (AUS) Scale (Jääskelä et al., 2017) was used to assess the students’ experiences of their personal, relational, and participatory resources of agency. Agency profiles were found to be associated with students’ perceptions of teaching practices in the courses. The find…
Educación XX1 : revista de la Facultad de Educación
2019
Translingual quoting in journalism : behind the scenes of Swiss television newsrooms
2019
This chapter focuses on translingual quoting (TQ), i.e. the subprocess of news-writing by which utterances from sources are both quoted and translated. Analyses of journalists’ mental and material activities suggest conceptualizing TQ as a complex and dynamic activity in which journalists’ individual and collective (e.g., institutional) language awareness, knowledge, and practices interact with multi-layered contexts of text production. Based on this empirically and theoretically grounded concept of TQ, the chapter presents a two-part typology of TQ: In sequential TQ, ready-made media items or interview materials are translated into another language; in parallel TQ, interviews and/or texts …
Mehr als Musik: Die sieben Dimensionen des Eurovision Song Contests
2008
