Testing the ontogenetic base for the transient model of inflorescence development
2013
† Backgrounds and Aims: Current research in plant science has concentrated on revealing ontogenetic processes of key attributes in plant evolution. One recently discussed model is the ‘transient model’ successful in explaining some types of inflorescence architectures based on two main principles: the decline of the so called ‘vegetativeness’ (veg) factor and the transient nature of apical meristems in developing inflorescences. This study examines whether both principles find a concrete ontogenetic correlate in inflorescence development. † Methods: To test the ontogenetic base of veg decline and the transient character of apical meristems the ontogeny of meristematic size in developing inf…
Differential Faradaic rectification polarography (DFRP)
1979
A new polarographic technique is described which is based on the determination of the Faradaic rectification effect. It will be of interest for analytical investigations and for electrode kinetics.
Amphiphilic derivatives of a polyaspartamide: their aggregation and solubilization ability.Tensiometric and spectrophotometric studies
2006
The self-aggregation and solubilization capability of a series of amphiphilic copolymers obtained by derivatisation of polymeric chain of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) with polyethylene glycols (PEG, being different molecular weight 2000 or 5000 Da, PEG2000 and PEG5000, respectively) and/or hexadecylamine alkyl chain (C16), namely PHEA–PEG2000, PHEA–PEG5000, PHEA–C16, PHEA–PEG2000–C16 and PHEA–PEG5000–C16, have been evidenced by performing systematic tensiometric and spectrophotometric studies. All measurements have been performed at 25.0 °C over a wide copolymer concentration range. The tensiometric results have shown that, for all copolymers studied, the surface tension…
Preparation and Characterization of Aminoglycoside-Loaded Chitosan/Tripolyphosphate/Alginate Microspheres against E. coli
2021
Although aminoglycosides are one of the common classes of antibiotics that have been widely used for treating infections caused by pathogenic bacteria, the evolution of bacterial resistance mechanisms and their inherent toxicity have diminished their applicability. Biocompatible carrier systems can help sustain and control the delivery of antibacterial compounds while reducing the chances of antibacterial resistance or accumulation in unwanted tissues. In this study, novel chitosan gel beads were synthesized by a double ionic co-crosslinking mechanism. Tripolyphosphate and alginate, a polysaccharide obtained from marine brown algae, were employed as ionic cross-linkers to prepare the chitos…
Peculiar mechanism of solubilization of a sparingly water soluble drug into polymeric micelles. Kinetic and equilibrium studies.
2012
Complementary kinetic and equilibrium studies on the solubilization process of the sparingly water soluble tamoxifen (TAM) drug in polymeric aqueous solutions have been performed by using the spectrophotometric method. In particular, the amphiphilic copolymers obtained by derivatization of polymeric chain of poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide, PHEA, with poly(ethylene glycol)s, PEG (2000 or 5000 Da), and/or hexadecylamine chain, C16, namely PHEA-PEG2000-C16, PHEA-PEG5000-C16, PHEA-C16, have been employed. Preliminary to the kinetic and equilibrium data quantitative treatment, the molar absorption coefficient of TAM in polymeric micelle aqueous solution has been determined. By these studi…
Improved experimental characterization of crystallization kinetics
2005
Polymer solidification occurring in many processes, like for instance injection molding, compression molding and extrusion, is a complex phenomenon, strongly influenced by the thermo-mechanical history experienced by the material during processing. From this point of view, characterization of polymer crystallization in the range of processing con- ditions, i.e. including high cooling rate, is of great technological and academic interest. Quiescent, non-isothermal crys- tallization kinetics of two polypropylene resins were investigated using a new method, based on fast cooling of thin samples with air/water sprays and optical detection of the crystallization phenomenon. The range of cooling …
Pore structure and water transfer in Pietra d’Aspra limestone: A neutronographic study
2020
Neutron radiography (NR) was here applied to study the effects of two different commercially available consolidants on the water absorption properties in a particular type of limestone (biocalcarenite), known as Pietra d’Aspra stone, which is one of the most extensively used lithotypes in Sicilian Baroque buildings. Our attention was mainly focused on the evaluation, using a fast and nondestructive visualization of water motion through capillarity, of the effectiveness of such layers as consolidating agents in view of preserving and maintaining both old and modern structures. The biocalcarenite was treated with nanosilica (Nano Estel®) and nanolime (CaLoSil®) by brushing it until full satur…
The type of GnRH analogue used during controlled ovarian stimulation influences early embryo developmental kinetics: a time-lapse study
2013
OBJECTIVE: To explore if the GnRH analogue used for controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) and the ovulation triggering factor (GnRH agonist + hCG triggering versus GnRH antagonist + GnRH agonist triggering) affect embryo development and kinetics.STUDY DESIGN: In a retrospective cohort study in the Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad (IVI) Alicante and the Instituto Universitario-IVI Valencia, Spain, 2817 embryos deriving from 400 couples undergoing oocyte donation were analysed. After controlled ovarian stimulation and IVF/intracytoplamic sperm injection, the timing of embryonic cleavages was assessed by a video time-lapse system. The results were analysed using Student's t test for compari…

Heat of crystallization significantly slows down polymer cooling and thus pressure drop increase during mould filling with thermoplastic crystalline polymers. If a correction of thermal diffusivity can account for such a cooling slow down at least as far as the effect on pressure drop is concerned, the use of nonisothermal crystallization kinetics may be avoided in the simulation of mould filling. A procedure to identify such a correction is outlined in this work. Pressure drop values during cavity filling calculated by using a corrected thermal diffusivity in the model proposed by Lord and Williams favourably compare with literature data taken with polypropylene and polyethylene resins. Be…
