Five Years of the Citizens Directive in the UK - Part 2

2011

This two-part article reviews how the UK authorities have fared in the practical application of Directive 2004/38/EC in the five years since it entered into force. It identifies and examines the most common problems faced by EU citizens when seeking to have their rights recognised by the UK authorities applying the Immigration (European Economic Area) Regulations 2006 by reference to questions and complaints received by Your Europe Advice. In examining the experience of EU citizens and their family members living in the UK, account is taken of a number of recent judgments of the European Court of Justice concerning EU citizenship, including Metock, Lassal, Eman & Sevinger and Ruiz Zambrano.…

2019

In 1701, in the aftermath of the ascension to the Spanish throne, Philip V began to design political and military reforms aimed at making administration more efficient and rationalizing the bureaucratic apparatus. This process had significant repercussions in the balance between the central power and representatives of local political powers who, in the delicate conjuncture of the War of Succession, redefined their participation within the Monarchy. This also happened in Sicily, where a large corpus of reform was directed to modify the island's defensive structure so as to guarantee the "conservation" of the kingdom and protect it from external and internal enemies, who worked jointly in su…

Medicina e religione: su alcuni contributi teratologici in Sicilia in età moderna

2023

The essay summarizes the parable of the affirmation of a teratological perspective in Sicily through some of its protagonists. What explanation do science and naturalists mature in the face of the disorienting epiphany of monstrous births? What lags and discontinuities are generated - in this path that is anything but linear and continuous - by a religious discourse that insists for a long time on the sacramental question and on the baptism of this unusual creatures? These are upheavals that make explicit the attempt by theology to still maintain an active dialogue with a medical discipline that in the modern age is gradually becoming the protagonist of an impetuous development.

Ius Regni: multiculturalismo giuridico e modelli di interazione normativa nella Sicilia normanna e sveva

2018

Multiculturalism is the main focus of the most recent historical studies on Norman Sicily. The famous 'Arab-Norman' monuments and the multilingual (Latin-Greek-Arabic) documents of the XI-XIIth centuries are the material witnesses of this syncretism. Encounter between cultures - Latin, Greek, Arabic - is structured in Sicily through complex mechanisms of integration and mutual acculturation. The legal interaction between different cultures is of course at the core of this complex phenomenon. This essay analyzes the dimension of multiculturalism and multinormativism, focusing on the various meanings of customs in Muslim, Norman and Swabian Sicily, and their relation with the rulers' statutes.

To what extent do our walking and cycling behaviours relate to each other, and do we cycle as well as we think we do? Piloting the Walking and Cyclin…

2022

Greater uptake of active transport has been argued as necessary for the transport system to achieve relevant sustainability and public health goals; however, the research tools used to investigate behaviour when using these modes are far less well-developed than those used to investigate driving behaviour. This study takes two self-report behavioural measures, the Walking Behaviour Questionnaire (WBQ) and the Cycling Behaviour Questionnaire (WBQ), and pilots them in the UK. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses with data from 428 respondents revealed factor structures different to those described in the limited number of previous studies that used the CBQ and WBQ. Across both questio…
