This paper offers a critical review of language education policies and the state of language education in England over the last decade (2000-2010), which has been characterised by a bewildering array of initiatives to promote language learning, year-on-year improved grades of school exams, and language education policies showing little coherence. The history of urbanization has barely been analyzed for the Mezzogiorno in Italy. This has partly been due to the persistence of stereotypes in Italian historiography, and partly due to the current definition of city functions. The article results from a meeting of specialists in Early Modern southern Italian history organized to undertake the rigorous and detailed study of the common features and the differences within the urban systems of the Mezzogiorno, in order to synthesize the specific character of urbanization in southern Italy over the long term. The author outlines the main areas under study and establishes its methodological foundations and first hypotheses.
Evolving Conceptualisations of Internationalism in the UK Parliament : Collocation Analyses from the League to Brexit

This chapter explores a historical distant reading strategy of British Parliamentary discourse. It uses historical collocation analyses of ‘internationalism’ and the ‘international’ in the British Hansard Corpus and a selection of Commons and Lords debates concerning British membership in international organisations as it relates to the League of Nations, United Nations, Council of Europe, EEC and Brexit. The collocates that were deemed to be politically significant are grouped in 13 loose semantic fields.
