A theory of laminated beams subjected to axial, bending and shear loads is presented in this paper. The kinematical model employed to describe the laminated beam displacement field is layer-wise in nature. Moreover it is such that the equilibrium equations and the continuity of the stress components at plies interfaces are satisfied. By using the whole set of interface continuity conditions in conjunction with the traction –free conditions on the beam top and bottom surfaces the layer-wise kinematical quantities are written in terms of the mechanical primary variables pertaining to one layer only, which are then expressed in terms of the laminated generalized displacements. Measuring the weather’s impact on MAC layer over 2.4GHz outdoor radio links

The weather s impact on the performance of a radio link at the 2.4 GHz ISM (Industry, Scientific and Medical) band had not been yet studied in great detail up to now as it is generally believed that the ultra-high frequency band is not significantly affected by weather conditions. However, our study shows significant correlations between meteorological variables and control frame errors at MAC (Medium Access Control) layer of the IEEE 802.11b/g standard. What is the Natural Abstraction Level of an Algorithm?

Abstract State Machines work with algorithms on the natural abstraction level. In this paper, we discuss the notion of the natural abstraction level of an algorithm and how ASM manage to capture this abstraction level. We will look into three areas of algorithms: the algorithm execution, the algorithm description, and the algorithm semantics. We conclude that ASM capture the natural abstraction level of the algorithm execution, but not necessarily of the algorithm description. ASM do also capture the natural abstraction level of execution semantics.

Performance analysis of selfish access strategies on WiFi infrastructure networks

In this paper we propose a game-theoretic approach for characterizing WiFi network performance in presence of intelligent nodes employing cognitive functionalities. We assume that a cognitive WiFi node is aware of its application requirements and is able to dynamically estimate the network status, in order to dynamically change its access strategy by tuning the contention window settings. A one class KNN for signal identification: a biological case study

The paper describes an application of a one class KNN to identify different signal patterns embedded in a noise structured background. The problem becomes harder whenever only one pattern is well-represented in the signal; in such cases, one class classifier techniques are more indicated. The classification phase is applied after a preprocessing phase based on a multi layer model (MLM) that provides preliminary signal segmentation in an interval feature space. The one class KNN has been tested on synthetic and real (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) microarray data in the specific problem of DNA nucleosome and linker regions identification. Results have shown, in both cases, a good recognition rate.
