In the electrochemical systems containing an excess of the background electrolyte, the faradaic process and the interfacial (‘double-layer’) charging are coupled to the fluxes of different charge carriers, the former being related to the diffusional transport of electroactive entities while the latter being realized mostly by ions of the supporting electrolyte. As a result, the interfacial capacitance Cdl may simply be added in parallel to the faradaic impedance specific for each particular system (Randles & Ershler). Stability and magnetic properties of Fe double layers on Ir (111)

We investigate the interplay between the structural reconstruction and the magnetic properties of Fe doublelayers on Ir (111)-substrate using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory and mapping of the total energies on an atomistic spin model. We show that, if a second Fe monolayer is deposited on Fe/Ir (111), the stacking may change from hexagonal close-packed to bcc (110)-like accompanied by a reduction of symmetry from trigonal to centered rectangular. Although the bcc-like surface has a lower coordination, we find that this is the structural ground state. This reconstruction has a major impact on the magnetic structure. On the Electrostatic Component of the Adhesional Interaction between Solid Substrates and Langmuir Monolayers

The work of adhesion between Langmuir monolayers and solid surfaces in a hydrophilic Langmuir-Blodgett configuration has been measured as function of the surface charge densities σ of the contacting surfaces. It was derived from the equilibrium meniscus height which was measured with the transfer fluorescence microscope. The surface charge density of the contacting surfaces was varied by changing the subphase pH. With both surfaces negatively charged (dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine onto SiO2-substrates) and low charge densities (σ < 1 e−/100 A2)) we observe a decrease of the adhesion with increasing charge density. Electrochemical reduction of graphene oxide and its in situ spectroelectrochemical characterization

The electrochemical properties of self-assembled films of graphene oxide (GO) on mercaptoethylamine (MEA) modified rough Au-surfaces were studied. The film deposition process on MEA primed gold was followed by surface plasmon resonance measurements and the film morphology on 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane primed Si(100)-surface was studied by atomic force microscopy. The deposited few layer thick GO films on gold were electrochemically reduced by cyclic voltammetry simultaneously as the structural changes in the film were recorded by in situ vibrational spectroscopies. DFT calculations have been performed on a palladium cluster adsorbed on two different carbonaceous supports, namely, two stacked polycircumcoronene units mimicking a double layer of graphite and a portion of an armchair (6,6) carbon nanotube. Studies of monolayer/substrate adhesion as function of the monolayer headgroup charge: DMPE and DMPA

The variation of the work of adhesion between lipid monolayers and a plane silicon oxide surface in a typical LB-configuration is measured as function of the subphase pH. The adhesion energy is deduced via fluorescence microscopy from the equilibrium meniscus height. With increasing pH the negative headgroup charge of both, dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DMPE) and dimyristoylphosphatidic acid (DMPA) monolayers increases. The increasing charge of DMPE is reflected in a measured decrease of the work of adhesion at higher pH. The DMPA/SiO2 interaction is not affected by increasing headgroup charges. The current study evaluates the ability of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) to forecast surface energy fluxes over a region in Eastern Spain. Focusing on the sensitivity of the model to Land Surface Model (LSM) parameterizations, we compare the simulations provided by the original Noah LSM and the Noah LSM with multiple physics options (Noah-MP). Trace gas composition in the Asian summer monsoon anticyclone: a case study based on aircraft observations and model simulations

We present in situ measurements of the trace gas composition of the upper tropospheric (UT) Asian summer monsoon anticyclone (ASMA) performed with the High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO) in the frame of the Earth System Model Validation (ESMVal) campaign. Air masses with enhanced O3 mixing ratios were encountered after entering the ASMA at its southern edge at about 150 hPa on 18 September 2012. This is in contrast to the presumption that the anticyclone's interior is dominated by recently uplifted air with low O3 in the monsoon season. We present high spatial resolution (up to 2.2×2.2 km2) simulations focussed over south-west Germany using the online coupled regional atmospheric chemistry model system MECO(n) (MESSy-fied ECHAM and COSMO models nested n times).
