È stato avviato uno studio di biomonitoraggio nel centro urbano di Marsala. Come altre città siciliane, pur non essendo interessata da importanti attività industriali, Marsala è caratterizzata da un inquinamento legato ad attività antropiche minori, quali l’uso dei combustibili fossili per autotrazione, per il riscaldamento domestico e per la navigazione. Il contesto geomorfologico in cui si sviluppa la città, ubicata in una zona pianeggiante, non determina alcun ostacolo importante alla circolazione degli inquinanti operata dai forti e costanti venti che spirano dal mare. Il deserto rappresenta per Sbarbaro una delle metafore poetiche predilette e lo specchio della condizione esistenziale del poeta. Se l’impossibilità di una corrispondenza tra sé e il mondo, la consapevolezza di una condizione di solitudine e aridità si oggettiva nell’immagine del deserto, il disperato attaccamento alla vita detta all’autore l’identificazione con la tenace resistenza dell’elemento naturale, dal pino abbrancato al tufo al fico che cresce storto e nano e soprattutto al lichene, al centro di un interesse estetico-scientifico qui indagato anche in relazione agli studi botanici del poeta.

We critically review the current data on the therapeutic effects and basic biological activities of the natural compound curcumin on various oral diseases: a sound experimental evidence appears to support its possible use against relevant pathologies which include cancer, radiotherapy- and chemotherapy-induced mucositis, lichen planus and periodontitis. This versatility of curcumin depends on its ability of interacting with multiple targets, though inhibition of the transcription factor NF-kB can be identified as one of the principal mechanisms. BACKGROUND: Lichen planus (LP) is a mucocutaneous inflammatory dermatosis that frequently involves the oral and genital mucosae. Role of serum interleukin-6 in deciding therapy for multidrug resistant oral lichen planus

Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a T cell mediated immune response. T cells locally present in the involved tissues release cytokines like interleukin-6 (IL-6), which contributes to pathogenesis of OLP. Also IL-6 has been associated with multidrug resistance protein (MRP) expression by keratinocytes. Correspondingly, upregulation of MRP was found in OLP. We conducted this study to evaluate the effects of various drugs on serum IL-6 in OLP; and correlation of these effects with the nature of clinical response and resistance pattern seen in OLP lesions with various therapeutic modalities. The chloroplast-encoded large subunit ribosomal RNA gene of several free-living green algae contains group I introns at Escherichia coli genic positions 1917, 1931, 1951, and 2449. Herein we report the presence of group I introns at these positions within the chloroplast-encoded large subunit ribosomal RNA gene of several lichen-forming green algae belonging to the Trebouxia genus. In contrast to the introns inserted at position 2449, all introns inserted at positions 1917, 1931, and 1951 contained LAGLIDADG homing endonuclease genes.
