The White Stone of South-Eastern Sicily: Urban and Territorial Identity
2017
Real-time Sound Source Localization on an Embedded GPU Using a Spherical Microphone Array
2015
Abstract Spherical microphone arrays are becoming increasingly important in acoustic signal processing systems for their applications in sound field analysis, beamforming, spatial audio, etc. The positioning of target and interfering sound sources is a crucial step in many of the above applications. Therefore, 3D sound source localization is a highly relevant topic in the acoustic signal processing field. However, spherical microphone arrays are usually composed of many microphones and running signal processing localization methods in real time is an important issue. Some works have already shown the potential of Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) for developing high-end real-time signal proce…
A bending theory of thermoelastic diffusion plates based on Green-Naghdi theory
2017
Abstract This article is concerned with bending plate theory for thermoelastic diffusion materials under Green-Naghdi theory. First, we present the basic equations which characterize the bending of thin thermoelastic diffusion plates for type II and III models. The theory allows for the effect of transverse shear deformation without any shear correction factor, and permits the propagation of waves at a finite speed without energy dissipation for type II model and with energy dissipation for type III model. By the semigroup theory of linear operators, we prove the well-posedness of the both models and the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of type III model. For unbounded plate of type III…
1,3-Dipolar cycloadditions of electrophilically activated benzonitrile N-oxides. Polar cycloaddition versus oxime formation.
2006
The reactions of electrophilically activated benzonitrile N-oxides (BNOs) toward 3-methylenephthalimidines (MPIs) have been studied using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31G* level. For these reactions, two different channels allowing the formation of the [3 + 2] cycloadducts and two isomeric (E)- and (Z)-oximes have been characterized. The 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions take place along concerted but highly asynchronous transition states, while formation of the oximes is achieved through a stepwise mechanism involving zwitterionic intermediates. Both reactions are initiated by the nucleophilic attack of the methylene carbon of the MPIs to the carbon atom of the electrophilically…
Interaction of Au16 Nanocluster with Defects in Supporting Graphite: A Density-Functional Study
2011
Soft-landed adsorption of Au-16 on bilayered graphene is investigated using density functional theory. The orientation of the Au-16 cluster and number of neighboring surface vacancies affect the overall structural and electronic properties of the cluster. The results of the PBE, vdW-DF, and vdW-DF2 exchange-correlation functionals are compared for the cluster-substrate interaction for systems with and without defects. In the presence of defects size two and greater, an Au atom adsorbs into the topmost graphene layer; this strongly influences the binding energy (>3 eV), while inducing substantial bending in the carbon plane and altering electronic properties of the system. Though the T-d-sym…
Phosphorylation of cytochromes P450: First discovery of a posttranslational modification of a drug-metabolizing enzyme
2005
Cytochromes P450 (CYP) are important components of xenobiotic-metabolizing monooxygenases (CYP-dependent monooxygenases). Their regulation by induction, most commonly by transcriptional activation, mediated by xenobiotics, normally substrates of the corresponding CYP, is well known and has been widely studied. Our team has discovered an additional important regulation of xenobiotic-metabolizing CYPs pertaining to posttranslational modification by phosphorylation. Individual CYPs are phosphorylated by different protein kinases, leading to CYP isoenzyme-selective changes in the metabolism of individual substrates and consequent drastic changes in the control of genotoxic metabolites. Resolving Binding Events on the Multifunctional Human Serum Albumin
2020
Abstract Physiological processes rely on initial recognition events between cellular components and other molecules or modalities. Biomolecules can have multiple sites or mode of interaction with other molecular entities, so that a resolution of the individual binding events in terms of spatial localization as well as association and dissociation kinetics is required for a meaningful description. Here we describe a trichromatic fluorescent binding‐ and displacement assay for simultaneous monitoring of three individual binding sites in the important transporter and binding protein human serum albumin. Independent investigations of binding events by X‐ray crystallography and time‐resolved dyn…
