Bone marrow biopsy in Hodgkin's lymphoma

In the study of patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) the evaluation of bone marrow biopsy (BMB) can be difficult. In this review we analyze the main diagnostic features and the clinical risk factors of BM involvement. Although the role of BMB is criticized by some authors, its value is irreplaceable in the staging of HL and in the diagnosis of primary medullary HL. The Ann Arbor staging committee criteria should be revised and updated in the light of the current immunohistochemical studies that give a fundamental help in the diagnostic process. A single BMB should be adequate for diagnosis in most instances. In cases of suspicious involvement a controlateral BMB could be performed.

We performed a multicenter study to validate the concept that a simple comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) can identify elderly, non-fit patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in whom curative treatment is not better then palliation, and to analyze potential benefits of treatment modulation after further subdividing the non-fit category by CGA criteria. One hundred and seventy-three patients aged > 69 treated with curative or palliative intent by clinical judgement only were grouped according to CGA into fit (46%), unfit (16%) and frail (38%) categories. Oral non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas (O-NHLs) are a rare group of diverse lymphoid tissue malignancies and represent less than 5% of the oral cavity malignancies and 2% of all extra-nodal NHLs. Oral-NHLs affect the Waldeyer’s-ring, the salivary glands, the bone of the jaws and the oral mucosa, their clinical appearance is very heterogeneous. Among the risk factors for NHLs are immunosuppression (primary or secondary), autoimmunity and inflammation. O-NHLs share the same risk factors. Abstract BACKGROUND: Tumed sequential treatment with fludarabine/cyclophosphamide/rituximab (FC-R) followed by Y-90 ibritumomab tiuxetan (IT) radioimmunotherapy may improve progression-free survival in patients (pts) with CD20+ NHL. Wireless capsule endoscopy is a new diagnostic procedure to detect diseases of the small bowel, in particular in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. We report on a 76-year-old patient who presented at our hospital with signs of gastrointestinal bleeding and hypochromic anaemia. Bidirectional endoscopy, push enteroscopy, angiography as well as small bowel barium enema rendered no pathologic findings. Wireless capsule endoscopy demonstrated a polypous space in the cantral area of the small bowel. A case of Burkitt’s lymphoma with bilateral jaws involvement in a 5-year-old boy is reported discussing the dentist’s role in the diagnosis and management of this disease. The initial clinical diagnosis established of maxillary swelling causing trismus was a dentoalveolar abscess. The incisional biopsy was performed and histopathological analysis, including immunohistochemistry, confirmed the Burkitt’s lymphoma. The patient underwent treatment and remains free of the disease for 36 months of follow-up.
