Co-Rotating Beams of Antiprotons and H- in LEAR and High Resolution Spectroscopy of pp̄ Atoms in Flight

Beams of pp atoms flighting in vacuum with adjustable velocity have been proposed to study the spectroscopy of protonium atoms with high energy resolution (Ae/E down to 10-5) by using differential absorber foils and conventional X-ray detectors for emission spectroscopy and fixed frequency high power radiation sources for induced spectroscopy1. This aproach would lead to an improvement by more than two orders of magnitude versus the possibilities of “conventional” experiments in the field of protonium planned at LEAR2, and would give ways to measure with high accuracy effects of electromagnetic and strong interactions on the atomic levels of protonium.

The influence of the quantum nature of nuclei in high harmonic generation from H+2-like molecular ions

We study the full quantum dynamics of a simple molecular ion driven by an intense laser field. In particular we show that the quantum nature of the nuclear dynamics affects the emitted high harmonic generation (HHG) spectra, strongly reshaping the plateau region. In fact, it is evident that the characteristic flat trend is transformed into a descending trend, with the lower harmonics being two orders of magnitude more intense than the higher harmonics. Model-free determination of dissociation energies of polyatomic systems.

We describe and apply a new procedure that allows a direct determination of dissociation energies of polyatomic systems (clusters, fullerenes, polymers, and other molecules) without any modeling of the systems under investigation. As an example, we have determined the dissociation energies of a series of gold clusters Au(+)n. A comparison with values obtained from statistical models of unimolecular dissociation shows that these models significantly fail to describe the data. In contrast, the new method yields values which are an order of magnitude more accurate, thus allowing one to experimentally set benchmarks for any theory which attempts to describe activated processes.

Seeing Double:ASASSN-18bt Exhibits a Two-Component Rise in the Early-Time K2 Light Curve

On 2018 Feb. 4.41, the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) discovered ASASSN-18bt in the K2 Campaign 16 field. With a redshift of z=0.01098 and a peak apparent magnitude of B_{max}=14.31, ASASSN-18bt is the nearest and brightest SNe Ia yet observed by the Kepler spacecraft. Here we present the discovery of ASASSN-18bt, the K2 light curve, and pre-discovery data from ASAS-SN and the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). The K2 early-time light curve has an unprecedented 30-minute cadence and photometric precision for an SN~Ia light curve, and it unambiguously shows a ~4 day nearly linear phase followed by a steeper rise. Long-Lived Slepton in the Coannihilation Region and Measurement of Lepton Flavour Violation at LHC

When the mass difference between the lightest slepton and the lightest neutralino is smaller than the tau mass, the lifetime of the lightest slepton in the constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) increases in many orders of magnitude with respect to typical lifetimes of other supersymmetric particles. In a general MSSM, the lifetime of the lightest slepton is inversely proportional to the square of the intergenerational mixing in the slepton mass matrices. Such a long-lived slepton would produce a distinctive signature at LHC and a measurement of its lifetime would be relatively simple. The PERC collaboration will perform high-precision measurements of angular correlations in neutron beta decay at the beam facility MEPHISTO of the Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz in Munich, Germany. The new beam station PERC, a clean, bright, and versatile source of neutron decay products, is designed to improve the sensitivity of neutron decay studies by one order of magnitude. The charged decay products are collected by a strong longitudinal magnetic field directly from inside a neutron guide. This combination provides the highest phase space density of decay products. Testing Time Dilation on Fast Ion Beams

We report the status of an experimental test of time dilation in Special Relativity. This is accomplished by simultaneously measuring the forward and backward Doppler shifts of an electronic transition of fast moving ions, using high-precision laser spectroscopy. From these two Doppler shifts both the ion velocity ? = v/c and the time dilation factor can be derived. From measurements based on saturation spectroscopy on lithium ions stored at ? = 0.03 and ? = 0.06 in the TSR heavy-ion storage ring, we achieved an upper limit for a [?2] deviation from Special Relativity of . Rotational excitation of mono- and doubly-deuterated water by hydrogen molecules

Rate coefficients for rotational transitions in HDO and D2O induced by H2 collisions below 300 K are presented. Calculations have been performed at the close-coupling and coupledstates levels with the deuterated variants of the H2O–H2 interaction potential of Valiron et al. The HDO–H2 and D2O–H2 rate coefficients are compared to the corresponding rate coefficients for HDO–He and H2O–H2, respectively. Significant differences are observed. In particular the new HDO rate coefficients are found to be significantly larger (by up to three orders of magnitude) than the corresponding HDO–He rate coefficients. OUTFLOWS FROM ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI: KINEMATICS OF THE NARROW-LINE AND CORONAL-LINE REGIONS IN SEYFERT GALAXIES,

As part of an extensive study of the physical properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) we report high spatial resolution near-IR integral-field spectroscopy of the narrow-line region (NLR) and coronal-line region (CLR) of seven Seyfert galaxies. These measurements elucidate for the first time the two-dimensional spatial distribution and kinematics of the recombination line Br{\gamma} and high-ionization lines [Sivi], [Alix] and [Caviii] on scales <300 pc from the AGN. The observations reveal kinematic signatures of rotation and outflow in the NLR and CLR.
