Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis

2012

Objectives: The reduction in the level of oestrogen, typical in menopause, has some effect on the health of the oral cavity. In fact, post-menopausal women present more severe periodontal disease than pre- menopausal women. Numerous factors can be held to be responsible for this increase, among which are the effects of oestrogens on the oral epithelium, on the salivary glands, on bone tissue and on the endothelium. Our double blind study aims to evaluate the possible variations in oral microcirculation in post-menopausal women. Methods: Twenty-seven women in post-menopause (age: Mean ± SD: 57.3 ± 8.73) and 27 women in pre-menopause (age: Mean ± SD: 27.77 ± 3.56) were examined. Oral microcir…

Effective use of a sodium-hyaluronate spray formulation in oral mucositis

2012

Background andaims: Orai mucositis (OM) is one of thè most frequent and potentially severe acute side effect of non-surgical cancer therapy which often leads to significant morbidity, mortality and decreased quality of life. Today a standard and universally accepted management strategy to prevent and treat it does not exist. Given thè key role played by connective damage in its pathogenesis, thè use of a compound which promotes thè extracellular matrix regeneration couìd be a valid therapeutic strategy. In this regard, thè use of hyaluronic acid, that plays an important role in orai lissue healing by means of several mechanisms, has been showed to provide good results in managing OM. The ai…

Periodontal disease and systemic diseases: interrelationships and interactions

2011

The focal infection theory, which for almost half a century justified indiscriminate extraction of teeth to cure focal infections, since the end of the 1940s has become progressively a discarded concept. In parallel with the declining importance assigned to pulp and periapical infections in the pathogenesis of focal diseases, over the last decade there has been increasing interest in the possible relationship between periodontal infection and systemic diseases. Periodontal pathogens and their products, as well as inflammatory mediators produced in gingival tissue, might enter the bloodstream through ulcerated pocket epithelium, causing systemic effects (focal diseases). On the basis of this…

Non-Syndrome Patient with Multiple Supernumerary Teeth: Case Report

2013

Polydentia is a variation in excess in the number of the teeth. Supernumerary teeth appear, especially in the maxilla, mostly between the central incisors (mesiodens) and in molars region. These positions are followed by the maxillary fourth molars, maxillary paramolars, mandibular premolars, maxillary lateral incisors, mandibular fourth molars and maxillary premolars. Supernumerary teeth may occur in single or multiple numbers bilateral occurrence is uncommon. It is rare to find multiple supernumeraries in individuals with no other associated disease or syndrome. The purpose of this study is to present, a case with mutiple supernumerary teeth in non-syndrome patient.

Use of porcine collagen matrix (Mucograft®) to promote the wound healing in the oral cavity

2015

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a new collagen matrix (Mucograft®; Geistlich Pharma AG, Wol- husen, Switzerland) in the soft tissue reconstruction after excisional biopsy. The healing of soft tissues after bioptical excision tends to heal by secondary intention. To avoid this, the soft tissue grafts can be harvested from the palate, retromolar pad, or (if available) edentulous site. Disadvantages of harvesting the graft from the retromolar pad and edentulous site are minimal amount of tissue availability and thinner grafts are obtained. The use of collagen matrix is also reported in literature and could represent an optimal solution in the future. Mucograft® is a pure colla…
