We witness an economic crisis without precedent that affects every area of our existence, rich and poor, at a global scale. The noise of financial crisis makes us no longer perceive other crises, which no one seems ready to accept them, namely a crisis of values that proliferate in our society. The experience of the past crises shows that the recession affecting mainly local companies, multinational companies managed to make profits during hard times for the economy of the host country, and the management is put in front of new challenges.

This study examines Finnish sport managers’ stories of their careers: how they had proceeded and what kinds of meanings they constructed in their stories. The data included interviews of sixteen Finnish operational and governmental managers from the top of Finnish sport administration. Four different story types were distinguished: the story of growth, drifting story, the story of coincidence and aspiration story. Sport managers’ stories illustrated at the individual level how the sport managers’ careers were constructed, but they also reflected the social reality and the wider sociocultural context of Finnish sport administration and management. Artikkelimme käsittelee keskijohdon asemaa tietotyön, tässä tapauksessa yliopistotyön, organisoinnissa. Tutkimuksen empiria perustuu haastatteluaineistoon, joka on osa laajempaa etnografista aineistoa.
