Does Kaniso activate CASINO?: input coding schemes and phonology in visual-word recognition.

2010

Most recent input coding schemes in visual-word recognition assume that letter position coding is orthographic rather than phonological in nature (e.g., SOLAR, open-bigram, SERIOL, and overlap). This assumption has been drawn – in part – by the fact that the transposed-letter effect (e.g., caniso activates CASINO) seems to be (mostly) insensitive to phonological manipulations (e.g., Perea & Carreiras, 2006 , 2008 ; Perea & Pérez, 2009 ). However, one could argue that the lack of a phonological effect in prior research was due to the fact that the manipulation always occurred in internal letter positions – note that phonological effects tend to be stronger for the initial syllable (…

Unveiling the boost in the sandwich priming technique.

2021

The masked priming technique (which compares #####-house-HOUSE vs. #####-fight-HOUSE) is the gold-standard tool to examine the initial moments of word processing. Lupker and Davis showed that adding a pre-prime identical to the target produced greater priming effects in the sandwich technique (which compares #####-HOUSE-house-HOUSE vs #####-HOUSE-fight-HOUSE). While there is consensus that the sandwich technique magnifies the size of priming effects relative to the standard procedure, the mechanisms underlying this boost are not well understood (i.e., does it reflect quantitative or qualitative changes?). To fully characterise the sandwich technique, we compared the sandwich and standard t…

Masked priming effects are modulated by expertise in the script.

2010

In a recent study using a masked priming same–different matching task, García-Orza, Perea, and Muñoz (2010) found a transposition priming effect for letter strings, digit strings, and symbol strings, but not for strings of pseudoletters (i.e., [Formula: see text] produced similar response times to the control pair [Formula: see text]). They argued that the mechanism responsible for position coding in masked priming is not operative with those “objects” whose identity cannot be attained rapidly. To assess this hypothesis, Experiment 1 examined masked priming effects in Arabic for native speakers of Arabic, whereas participants in Experiments 2 and 3 were lower intermediate learners of Arabi…

Silent say, saying effective and discourse mask

2021

In communication, every speaker must choose meticulously the aptness in the word, the gesture, the smile, the look or even the silence. The being-speaker hides and beyond protects himself behind his discursive mask which provides him with a linguistic security. While many disciplines - social psychology, psychoanalysis and philosophy – have seized the notion of the mask in their frame of reference, this concept still remains absent today in the language sciences. However, the game of masks substitution is fundamental in language activity. This game is so usual that we do not even notice it anymore, except in situations where we are explicitly asked to make an effort to adapt to the rule of …

Effects of Kaolin on Ophelimus maskelli (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in Laboratory and Nursery Experiments

2011

Although recent research has demonstrated that clays provide satisfactory control of some agricultural insect pests, the effect of clays on gall wasps that damage forest trees has not been previously reported. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the clay kaolin in the laboratory and in the field in reducing the damage caused by the eulophid Ophelimus maskelli (Ashmead) on seedlings of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus L'Hér.) species. In the laboratory, kaolin + wetting agent significantly reduced the percentage of infested leaves and the number of galls per leaf. In the nursery, gall number per leaf was not correlated with leaf area with kaolin + wetting agent but was rel…

COVID-19 Pandemic: Prevention and protection measures to be adopted at the workplace

2020

Introduction: SARS-CoV-2, identified in Wuhan, China, for the first time in December 2019, is a new viral strain, which has not been previously identified in humans; it can be transmitted both by air and via direct and indirect contact; however, the most frequent way it spreads is via droplets. Like the other viruses belonging to the same family of coronaviruses, it can cause from mild flu-like symptoms, such as cold, sore throat, cough and fever, to more severe ones such as pneumonia and breathing difficulties, and it can even lead to death. Since no effective specific drug therapy has been found yet, nor any vaccine capable of limiting the spread of this pathogen, it is important for way…

Behind the mask: Rethinking the use of face masks while exercising

2021

there is an ongoing global effort against COVID-19 pan-demic. As vaccination is applied globally (predominantly onat-risk populations), various measures such as temporaryself-quarantine, social distancing, increased hand hygiene, and wearing a face mask (FM) proposed by the World HealthOrganization (WHO) and various governments worldwide arestill in place as primary means of preventing further dissemi-nation. In many instances, wearing a FM became mandatorywhen a person is in a closed space while being accompa-nied by others. Many individuals are therefore apprehensivein terms of maintaining their usual physical activity rout-ines and staying safe in the midst of the outbreak. Asa result, it…

Study and Comparison of Surface Roughness Measurements

2014

Journées du Groupe de Travail en Modélisation Géométrique (GTMG'14), Lyon; This survey paper focus on recent researches whose goal is to optimize treatments on 3D meshes, thanks to a study of their surface features, and more precisely their roughness and saliency. Applications like watermarking or lossy compression can benefit from a precise roughness detection, to better hide the watermarks or quantize coarsely these areas, without altering visually the shape. Despite investigations on scale dependence leading to multi-scale approaches, an accurate roughness or pattern characterization is still lacking, but challenging for those treatments. We think there is still room for investigations t…

Grafiskās identitātes miega aksesuāriem ceļošanai vizuāli stilistiskie aspekti

2018

Modification of face masks with zeolite imidazolate framework-8

2022

The worldwide spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has continued to accelerate, putting a considerable burden on public health, safety, and the global economy. Taking into consideration that the main route of virus transmission is via respiratory particles, the face mask represents a simple and efficient barrier between potentially infected and healthy individuals, thus reducing transmissibility per contact by reducing transmission of infected respiratory particles. However, long-term usage of a face mask leads to the accumulation of significant amounts of different pathogens and viruses onto the surface of the mask and can result in dangerous bacterial and viral co-infections. Zeolite imidazolat…
