Background The present systematic review analyzed the current literature to investigate whether rapid maxillary expansion (RME) causes radicular resorption, assessed by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Material and methods Eighteen electronic databases and reference lists of studies were searched up to November 2017. Grey literature was also screened. Meta-analysis of the etiology of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis.

Objective: To identify and evaluate the frequency of the different odontogenic conditions that may lead to maxillary sinusitis. Study design: An observational and retrospective meta-analysis was carried out on 770 cases of maxillary sinusitis obtained from a literature review of 15 articles. Results: Maxillary sinusitis most commonly manifests itself as chronic maxillary sinusitis. It is more common in females and is most often diagnosed in the fifth decade of life. The teeth most predominantly affected are the molars, with the first molar tooth being the most frequently involved. The principal etiological factor is extraction.

Stability and surgical complications of tooth-borne and bone-borne appliances in surgical assisted rapid maxillary expansion: a systematic review

The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the stability and complications of tooth-borne (TB), bone-borne (BB) and hybrid (TB-BB) appliances in surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME). Database searches were conducted (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and SciELO), as well as a grey literature search (Google Scholar) and hand searches of reference lists. Forty-six articles were included after study selection (κ=0.854). Treatment of Class III malocclusion using Hybrid Hyrax, Face Mask and Alt-RAMEC Protocol : a case report in a latin-american patient

The management of Class III malocclusion is one of the greatest challenges of orthodontics. Current treatments offer the possibility of using direct skeletal anchorage to improve clinical outcomes. This case shows the results of using a Hyrax hybrid palatal anchorage, Alt-RAMEC (Alternate Rapid Maxillary Expansion and Contraction protocol) and a facemask to treat a maxillary hypoplasia Class III malocclusion in a Latin-American patient. The appliance design and the protocol used are widely described. Fibrous dysplasia is a benign skeletal disorder in which the normal bone and marrow are replaced by fibrous tissue and haphazardly distributed woven bone. The aim of this case report is to discuss the orthodontic treatment of a 13-year-old patient with fibrous dysplasia in the left maxilla. The patient had rotated maxillary second premolars, moderate crowding in both maxillary and mandibular arches with low maxillary frenal attachment. The zygomatic fixture is an extended length (35–55 mm) titanium implant, placed into the zygomatic and maxillary alveolar bone. It was designed for situations where atrophy of the posterior maxilla complicates or prevents the placing of conventional implants. The use of zygomatic implants avoids the need for bone grafting, shortens treatment times, and reduces morbidity. They have also been used in patients with maxillectomies resulting from tumors or diseases associated with atrophic conditions of the maxilla.
