Mediterranean diet impact on cardiovascular diseases: a narrative review

2017

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounts for more than 17 million deaths per year worldwide. It has been estimated that the influence of lifestyle on CVD mortality amounts to 13.7% for smoking, 13.2% for poor diet, and 12% for inactive lifestyle. These results deeply impact both the healthy status of individuals and their skills in working. The impact of CVD on productivity loss accounts for the 24% in total costs for CVD management. Mediterranean diet (MedD) can positively impact on natural history of CVD. It is characterized by a relatively high consumption of inexpensive and genuine food such as cereals, vegetables, legumes, nuts, fish, fresh fruits, and olive oil as the principal source of…

Japanese, Mediterranean and Argentinean diets and their potential roles in neurodegenerative diseases

2019

Environmental factors are responsible of cellular senescence and processes found in the development of cognitive disorders. The aim of this paper is to compare benefits of the Japanese, Mediterranean, and Argentinian Diet on the onset or prevention of senile dementia (SD) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Special focus was on the effects of specific compounds such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), antioxidants, and saturated and trans fatty acids. A high adherence to diets rich in PUFAs, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and antioxidants may decrease the risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases ; while the predominance of saturated and trans fatty acids possibly rises it.

Postprandial metabolism: from research to clinical practice.

2013

Over the last decade, the importance of postprandial metabolism has increased, given that it is the physiological state of humans in modern society. Moreover, postprandial lipemia is considered as a key player in the development of the most important cardiometabolic diseases. In this regard, postprandial lipemia has become more important, since it has been demonstrated that nonfasting triglycerides (TGs) are independent predictors of the risk of cardio vascular disease (CVD) [1,2]. Interestingly, the postprandial phase has been associated with increased inflammation and oxidation, which influences vascular function through a permanent endothelial aggression by atherogenic lipoprotein. TGs a…

A Combined Multidisciplinary Intervention for Health Promotion in the Workplace: A Pilot Study

2021

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a joint health promotion intervention on a cohort of healthcare workers (HCWs) who had at least one cardiovascular risk factor. The HCWs were assessed at three different times, i.e., time zero (T0), after 6 months (T6), and after 12 months (T12). The following parameters were measured at a medical examination: physical activity, blood pressure, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), routine laboratory tests, plicometric analysis, work ability index (WAI), and body image dissatisfaction (BID). Among the 447 HCWs, 38 HCWs were included in the study; 45% (n = 17) were male. At T12, the average blood pressure, waist/hip ratio (WHR) index, …
