FRI0349 PSORIATIC ARTHRITIS AND CENTRAL OBESITY: STRONG ASSOCIATION WITH FUNCTIONAL DISABILITY AND A WORSE QUALITY OF LIFE
2020
Background:Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis associated with comorbidities like obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. Adipose tissue leads to a pro-inflammatory status in obese subjects. For this reason, central obesity may determine a worsening in both disability index or quality of life in PsA patients treated with biologic agents. Objectives:Our study aimed to evaluate the relationship between central obesity and disability index or the impact of the disease on quality of life in a real-world sample of PsA patients. Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted. Patients with PsA were enrolled at the PsA clinic at the ARNAS Civico in Palermo (…
Bilateral ruptures of the extensor mechanism of the knee: A systematic review
2017
Abstract Introduction We conduct a systematic and qualitative review of the current literature to evaluate studies that described bilateral ruptures of the extensor mechanism of the knee. Methods A comprehensive literature search was performed to evaluate all studies included in the literature until September 2016. Results Fourteen studies with a total of 44 patients met the inclusion criteria. There were 14 patients with CRF (61%), 6 patients were affected by diabetes mellitus (14%) while other 6 patients were obese patients (14%). Conclusion CRF represents the most frequent comorbidity in patients with bilateral quadriceps/patellar tendon ruptures.
Genome-wide association study of diabetic kidney disease highlights biology involved in renal basement membrane collagen
2018
Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a heritable but poorly understood complication of diabetes. To identify genetic variants predisposing to DKD, we performed genome-wide association analyses in 19,406 individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) using a spectrum of DKD definitions basedon albuminuria and renal function. We identified 16 genome-wide significant loci. The variant with the strongest association (rs55703767) is a common missense mutation in the collagen type IV alpha 3 chain(COL4A3)gene, which encodes a major structural component of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) implicated in heritable nephropathies. The rs55703767 minor allele (Asp326Tyr) is protective against several definit…

Diabète de type 2 chez le sujet âgé : quelles spécificités ?
2012
Type 2 diabetes, whose prevalence has increased among elderly aged over 75 years, has a number of specific features which differ from that in young people: heterogeneous population, association with other cardiovascular risk factors and several comorbidities, different therapeutic constraints and risks, and lower life expectancy. By using a standardized geriatric assessment it is possible to determine therapeutic and glycemic goals for each patient. In the elderly, main complications of diabetes are hypoglycemia and foot lesions. In order to avoid malnutrition, lifestyle and dietary rules should not be too strict. Recommendations for the prescription of oral antidiabetic agents are the same…
Associations between interleukin-1 (IL-1) gene variations or IL-1 receptor antagonist levels and the development of type 2 diabetes

Cardiovascular health in former elite male athletes
2015
To increase our knowledge on the effects of previous and current physical activity on cardiovascular health, we studied a group of Finnish male former elite athletes (endurance, n = 49; power, n = 50) and their 49 age and area-matched controls, aged 64–89 years. Body mass index (BMI), fasting serum glucose, lipids, blood pressure, and ultrasonography of cardiac and carotid artery structure and function were measured. Former endurance athletes smoked less, had lower prevalence of hypertension, and had higher intensity and volume of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) than the controls. No difference was detected in cardiac or carotid artery structure and function between these groups. Form…
