Low Serum Choline Concentrations Are Associated with Worse Cognitive Performance in Subjects with Metabolic Syndrome

2020

OBJECTIVES: Choline is an essential nutrient critical for components of the cell membrane, such as choline-containing phospholipids (phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin), and in synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Choline has been shown to exert neuroprotective effects, but the association between serum choline and cognitive performance has been scarcely investigated. Our aims are: 1) To study the association between serum total choline, phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin with cognitive performance in subjects with metabolic syndrome; and 2) to analyze genetic variants and dietary intake most associated with cholines in this population. METHODS: We analyzed 426 subjects (a…

Nutraceuticals as Lipid-Lowering Treatment in Pregnancy and Their Effects on the Metabolic Syndrome.

2015

Maternal nutrition and lifestyle before and during pregnancy influence both mother and offspring's health and can be correlated with the metabolic syndrome in later life. Findings from animal and human studies indicate that nutrition during pregnancy has an important role in microbiological, metabolic, physiologic and immunologic development and homeostasis. A low nutritional intake in early pregnancy may represent a risk for adverse effects during pregnancy as well as on birth outcome. It seems that dietary supplementation with probiotics in perinatal period may represent safe and practical approach in dealing with the most common adverse pregnancy outcomes such as obesity and gestational …

n-3 Fatty Acids Modulate T-Cell Calcium Signaling in Obese Macrosomic Rats

2004

Objective: We investigated the effects of a diet containing EPAX-7010, rich in PUFAs such as eicosapentaenoic acid [20:5(n-3)] and docosahexaenoic acid [22:6(n-3)], i.e., a PUFA/EPAX regimen, on T-cell activation in diabetic pregnant rats and their obese pups. Research Methods and Procedures: Mild hyperglycemia in pregnant rats was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin on Day 5 of gestation. T-cell blastogenesis was assayed by using 3H-thymidine, whereas intracellular free calcium concentrations ([Ca2+]i) were measured by using Fura-2 in diabetic pregnant rats and their obese offspring. Results: Concavalin-A-stimulated T-cell proliferation was decreased in both pregnant dia…

Age-related changes in cholesterol metabolism in macrosomic offspring of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes.

2001

The aim of this study was to determine the impact of diabetic macrosomia on cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism. Age-related changes in the activities of serum LCAT, hepatic HMG-CoA reductase, cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase, and ACAT, the major enzymes involved in cholesterol metabolism, were determined in macrosomic offspring of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Hepatic, serum, and lipoprotein cholesterol contents were also examined. Mild hyperglycemia in pregnant rats was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (40 mg/kg body weight) on day 5 of gestation. Control pregnant rats were injected with citrate buffer. At birth, macrosomic pups had higher serum, LDL-HDL1, and H…

Glucose homeostasis is impaired in mice deficient for the neuropeptide 26RFa (QRFP)

2019

AbstractIntroduction26RFa (QRFP) is a biologically active peptide that has been found to control feeding behaviour by stimulating food intake, and to regulate glucose homeostasis by acting as an incretin. The aim of the present study was thus to investigate the impact of 26RFa gene knockout on the regulation of energy and glucose metabolism.Research design and methods26RFa mutant mice were generated by homologous recombination, in which the entire coding region of prepro-26RFa was replaced by the iCre sequence. Energy and glucose metabolism was evaluated through measurement of complementary parameters. Morphological and physiological alterations of the pancreatic islets were also investigat…

Birth Weight and Diabetic Retinopathy: Results From the Population-Based Gutenberg Health Study (GHS).

2020

Purpose: This study investigates the relationship between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and birth weight (BW) in diabetic subjects sampled from the general population. Methods: The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) is a population-based, observational cohort study in participants aged from 35 to 74 years. Criteria for diabetes diagnosis were HbA1c ≥6.5% at study entry, a doctor-diagnosis of diabetes, or diabetes medication. The presence of DR was determined by evaluating fundus photographs. BW was assessed by self-reports. GHS participants were divided into three different BW groups (low: <2500 g; normal: 2500–4000 g; high:>4000 g). Logistic regression analysis was conducted as uni- and multiv…

Vergleich des Hypoglykämieempfindens und der hormonellen Gegenregulation während einer kontrollierten Hypoglykämie: Ein Beitrag zur Diagnostik des Hy…

2008

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Diabetics with abnormal hypoglycaemia awareness cannot recognize hypoglycaemic symptoms early and adequately enough to respond, thus endangering in everyday life not only themselves but also others. Thus it is important to diagnose such symptoms early and assess the extent to which the diabetic is at risk of severe hypoglycaemia. This study was designed to contribute to the evaluation of hypoglycaemia awareness in type 1 (IDDM) diabetics. PATIENTS AND METHODS In 57 diabetics (IDDM) awareness of typical hypoglycaemic warning symptoms and of hormonal counterregulation were tested during controlled induced hypoglycaemia. A questionnaire was used to measure at fixed tim…
